The Newton Cultural Alliance highlights our member events happening around Newton this week. Warm up your week with some exciting arts and culture events!

 

 

*First Baptist Church and Historic Newton present Underground Railroad: A Traveling Book Group on Thursday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the Jackson Homestead and Museum, 527 Washington Street, Newton. Newton has been home to at least two stops on the historic Underground Railroad. Using Colson Whitehead’s fictional novel, The Underground Railroad, as a starting point for discussion, the traveling book group celebrates Newton’s legacy of freedom and invites further conversation to foster thinking about social justice in our own time. Reading the novel is not a prerequisite for joining the discussion. Event includes a tour of the Jackson Homestead. FREE and open to the public. More info and sign up at fbcnewton.org.

*The Newton Art Association presents Artist Demo: Lisa Goren, “Fabriano Papers” with samples on Thursday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Newton Senior Center, 345 Walnut Street, Newtonville. Join NAA for this exciting artist demo! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments provided by Delicate Flour Bakery. FREE and open to the public. More info at newtonartassociation.com.

*New Art Center presents Art with a Twist on Friday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. at their location at 61 Washington Park, Newton. Create art in a maker space with a local artist who will guide you through a different experience each session. Learn about materials and techniques in a space that encourages you to develop your own creativity. Enjoy a relaxed evening, with beer and wine available for purchase. Come with your best friend, a date, or with your own creative spirit! All materials provided; tuition includes one drink. Registration required. Event is for 21+. ID required. Cost is $40. *Commonwealth Chorale presents Transformation & Celebration on Saturday, November 16, at 8:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury. Join Commonwealth Chorale for one of the most exciting events in their history as they present an oratorio for chorus and orchestra commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of David Carrier as Music Director. Carson Cooman, whose work has been performed all over the globe, has teamed with UK-based librettist Euan Tait in their first major collaboration. As We Are Changed is a lyrical and rousing exploration of personal and shared transformation in a challenging world. Also on the program: Synergy, an orchestral work by cellist and composer Emmanuel Feldman. Tickets are $25-$35. More info at commonwealthchorale.com.

*Suzuki School of Newton presents its Faculty Benefit Concert on Sunday, November 17, at 4:00 p.m. at the Second Church in Newton, 60 Highland Street, West Newton. Faculty members from the Suzuki School of Newton present an afternoon of chamber music from the Baroque era to the present day, featuring works by Cesar Franck, Gabriel Faure, Franz Schubert, Luys de Narvaez, Samuel Barber, Jennifer Grady, and Max Richter. All ticket proceeds benefit the James Thornblade Memorial Scholarship Fund. In addition to the faculty performances, there will be a silent auction, a raffle, and a post-concert reception.
