SUMMARY:Newton Art Association's High School Senior Art Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years the Newton Art Association (NAA) has recognized art students through the NAA High School Senior Scholarship Program. NAA strongly believes that talented students deserve to be acknowledged for their artistic accomplishments.  \nSenior students who go to high school in Newton or are residents of Newton are eligible to apply for the scholarships. Consistently\, the submitted artworks reveal an extensive range of creativity across all media\, including painting\, drawing\, collage/mixed media\, photography\, jewelry\, fabric art and 3D works.  \nAwards are based on an overall assessment of the senior’s creativity\, artistic expression\, technical skills\, and personal statement. The recipients share $3\,000 in scholarship money. \nEligible students can apply online from February 8 through March 30\, 2021. A virtual award ceremony will be held May 5. Details about the program and online application process can be found on the NAA website. If you know a talented high school senior\, encourage them to apply.

SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: The Benefits and Approach to Creating Individual Critique Groups
DESCRIPTION:Forming a virtual critique group is an invaluable way to get together and share our work. Myra Abelson & Chippa Martin have been co-hosting NAA critique meetings for many years and have also been part of a small critique group that meets monthly. They will lead this workshop that is designed to help others understand the basics of forming a small critique group and the benefits of such an endeavor. \nSome of the topics we will address include optimal group size\, length and frequency of each meeting\, and rules of engagement. We will discuss how to give and ask for feedback for optimal gain. We will also show how Zoom and DropBox make virtual meetings successful. This workshop will be open to all members who wish to attend. No attendance limit. \nPlease email Myra Abelson to be included on the guest list. A Zoom and DropBox link will be mailed out a couple of days prior to the Critique dates and a zoom link will be mailed to those attending the Workshop.

SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: Celebrate Louis Lewandowski's 200th Birthday!
DESCRIPTION:On March 14\, Zamir will celebrate the music of the great German composer\, Louis Lewandowski\, born on this date (the first day of the Jewish month of Nisan) in 1821. Lewandowski is arguably the greatest synagogue composer of the 19th century. His great choral works live on today not only in synagogues\, but also on concert stages around the world. And his popular liturgical melodies are still sung today\, even though few realize that he wrote them. \nOur program includes video performances of some of Lewandowski’s most beloved choral classics. We also have interviews with cantors and conductors in the United States and Lewandowski’s Berlin. You will hear the “voice of Lewandowski” speaking about his music. And there will be toasts\, too\, so bring your stein of beer and watch this awesome tribute to a great man.
