SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Freedom Baird
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nThere were blackberries on a hilltop\, a skinny doe and her two fawns\, a glossy ibis\, and an octopus. There were also teens with a shotgun\, bootleg baseball\, missiles on a launch pad\, and a children’s hospital on fire. These are among the memories\, experiences and impressions gathered from more than seventy participants in the Shore Line Recall art project during the summer of 2018 on the Boston Harbor Islands. Interdisciplinary artist Freedom Baird brought a vintage field desk to nine islands and a boat\, and placed it in the most vulnerable spot she could reach\, at high tide. In those windswept places she talked with visitors\, staff\, and volunteers\, gathering their stories and drawings to preserve and share in a book of the same name — Shore Line Recall: Boston Harbor Islands. She also documented the islands in photographs\, a collection of which she curated into the book’s pages. As we continue to transform the planet\, one way we can adapt is with a kind of future nostalgia–looking forward to a moment when we will look back and remember places that will someday be long gone. \nIn this presentation and discussion Baird will share her experience of the Shore Line Recall residency\, project\, and book. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Isabel Beavers
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nIsabel Beavers will lead an interactive artist presentation\, as she presents recent works that explore climate change as a moment of origin\, and invites participants to co-create an artistic experiment over virtual space. Please bring a sketchbook or paper\, and a writing or drawing utensil to the presentation. \nBeavers practice includes many forms: multimedia installation\, new media and virtual forms of creation and presentation\, curatorial projects\, as well as social practice experiments in the form of mini-hackathons and worldwide collaborations. In each case her work attempts to combat systems of oppression as they relate to ecology\, bodies and environments\, instead imagining new climate futures. Through site-responsive research and artistic projects she interrogates cultural responses to climate change\, speculates about climate futures\, and questions the ethics of emergent technologies. Recent projects have explored the unraveling of the Arctic Ocean ecosystem\, embedded power structures in Icelandic origin stories and Norse Mythology\, mega-fires in California as a case study for the operation of compassion fatigue\, and curatorial projects addressing extraction\, artificial intelligence\, and artificial ecologies. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Theatre Ink presents: Lost and Found - The Untold Stories of People of Color
DESCRIPTION:Time and time again\, the stories of people of color are swept under the rug and lost. It is about time we found them. \nWhat is Lost and Found? Lost and Found is about sharing the stories of people of color and amplifying their voices through the performing arts. From hardships to celebrations\, people of color have countless stories to tell. Lost and Found will provide space for people of color to reflect on their identity and experiences in order to assemble a cabaret style troupe show of stories. Over time\, people of color have many encounters with their racial identity\, and a goal of Lost and Found is to explore and understand racial identity in ways you haven’t before. Lost and Found will be a reserved safe space for this exploration and for people of color to be vulnerable and receive support. Lost and Found invites you to share your story\, using theatre and performing arts as an outlet. \nClick here to buy tickets.
