Hornbrook statue which is part of the Newton Free Library’s Permanent Collection of Art\, was also an educator\, activist and agent of change? Join Cyrus Dallin Art Museum director and curator\, Heather Leavell\, for a program that will cover the history of three local Dallin works\, illustrating how Dallin employed his position as an internationally acclaimed sculptor to fight the oppression of Indigenous people. Learn how Dallin took a lead role in efforts to reform government policies adversely affecting Native peoples and educate the general public about Indigenous cultures. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nGeorgie Friedman is an interdisciplinary artist whose projects include large-scale video installations\, single and multi-channel videos and several photographic series. She is interested in our psychological and societal relationships to mild and severe natural phenomena. She investigates a wide range of powerful atmospheric and oceanic conditions\, and is fascinated by the power of these natural elements in relationship to human fragility. SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Nathalie Miebach
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nNathalie Miebach’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines\, Miebach translates scientific data related to ecology\, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures. Miebach’s method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. Central to this work is the desire to explore the role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of scientific information. By utilizing artistic processes and everyday materials\, Miebach questions and expands the traditional boundaries through which science data has been visually translated (ex: graphs\, diagrams)\, while at the same time provoking expectations of what kind of visual vocabulary is considered to be in the domain of ‘science’ or ‘art’. \nClick here for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Practice some self-care for spring and learn to make your own lavender soap! We’ll use a shea butter melt and pour base\, lavender essential oil\, and dried lavender to create our soap. Lavender not your favorite? Combine the base with your own essential oils and dried herbs and flowers to develop a soap that’s uniquely yours. \nRegister for this class and then pick up a kit at the Main Desk starting Thursday\, March 4. Then join us on Zoom to get creative! \nSupplies are limited. Please pick up one kit per registrant only if you are registered for the program. If you are waitlisted\, we will not have a kit ready for you but we will still send you the Zoom link.
