SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Chanel Thervil
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our spring Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work explores community and public spaces. \nMany pieces make the whole and more often the not\, artists are attentive to details that unify. \nChanel Thervil is a Haitian American artist and educator that uses varying combinations of abstraction and portraiture to convene communal dialogue around culture\, social issues\, and existential questions. At the core of her practice lies a desire to empower and inspire tenderness and healing among communities of color through the arts. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Pace University and a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She’s been making a splash in Boston via her educational collaborations\, public art\, and residencies with institutions like The Museum of Fine Arts\, The Boston Children’s Museum\, The DeCordova\, and The Harvard Ed Portal\, and The Cambridge Public Library. Her work has been featured by PBS Kids\, The Boston Globe\, The Boston Herald\, The Bay State Banner\, WBUR’s ARTery\, WGBH\, and Hyperallergic. \nClick here for more info.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Cubism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At about the same time as the invention of Cubism\, Einstein was publishing his early papers on relativity; masks\, artifacts and ritual objects from Africa were first exhibited in Paris\, and the Eiffel Tower was new. Cubism was invented\, in part\, as a way of examining and painting stationary objects to incorporate what the object looks like as you move around it\, i.e. from different perspectives. Cubism sought to incorporate time as the fourth dimension in the arts. \nWe’ll start with drawing still-lifes with charcoal\, pencil\, pen and ink\, working from life rather than from Cubist drawings and paintings. Then we’ll begin the painting process using the earth tones of those early cubist paintings for the same reasons. First working out the structure with shapes and values\, then bringing colors to it as we progress\, much as the Cubists developed their plans. In the last session\, we’ll work from a model\, and we highlight painting in planes\, breaking down curves into prism-like flat sides. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with Katherine Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our spring Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work explores community and public spaces. \n\nFor Katherine Miller\, painting is the most intuitive and effective form of communication. She believes that beauty lies in minimal complexity. She creates freedom within structure. Everything about nature and the landscape inspires Miller’s imagery. In her work\, she considers the honesty and purity of color and the use of visual metaphor. Her goal is to create paintings that capture visual and emotional moments. Using shapes derived from the landscape\, Miller distills the visual essence of purity to capture feelings through abstraction. \n\nClick here for Zoom link.
