SUMMARY:Newton Art Association's High School Senior Art Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years the Newton Art Association (NAA) has recognized art students through the NAA High School Senior Scholarship Program. NAA strongly believes that talented students deserve to be acknowledged for their artistic accomplishments.  \nSenior students who go to high school in Newton or are residents of Newton are eligible to apply for the scholarships. Consistently\, the submitted artworks reveal an extensive range of creativity across all media\, including painting\, drawing\, collage/mixed media\, photography\, jewelry\, fabric art and 3D works.  \nAwards are based on an overall assessment of the senior’s creativity\, artistic expression\, technical skills\, and personal statement. Details about the program and online application process can be found on the NAA website. If you know a talented high school senior\, encourage them to apply.

SUMMARY:Historic Newton presents: Searching for the Promised Land - The Great Migration
DESCRIPTION:Between 1915 and 1970 almost 7 million African Americans fled the U.S. South for northern and western cities. In the process\, they transformed America. Standard accounts pigeonhole the Great Migration into the American immigrant myth of searching for jobs and opportunity. However\, the movement of Black migrants speaks to a much broader quest for freedom\, even though calls for equality were answered with racial violence\, redlined neighborhoods\, and inferior schools. The Great Migration is also a Boston story that includes families who settled in Newton. Following the routes and roadblocks of Black migrants\, this talk by Davarian Baldwin\, author and professor at Trinity College\, speaks to the hopes and limits of the American Dream for us all. Register in advance to join us for this Zoom talk co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library.
