SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Spring Series: Salon 3
DESCRIPTION:The Spring Salon Series takes place entirely online. Concerts premiere at 8pm on Thursday night and are available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \nDance in Celebration and Reflection \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. We will come together in contemplation of the horrors of slavery and its lasting legacy\, in celebration of emancipation\, and in honor of the continuing work that must be done to eradicate white supremacy. We will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. \nProgram: \nPRICE String Quartet No. 2 in A minor \nDOROTHY RUDD MOORE Modes \nWYNTON MARSALIS At the Octoroon Balls \n

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: An American History of the Long Road to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Matthew Delmont for a program that will explore the origins and importance of Juneteenth – a celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S. – and of the generations of Black Americans who have fought for freedom and equality. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas to commemorate the date when U.S. Army troops and news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the state on June 19\, 1865. Today\, nearly every state observes this date\, including Massachusetts\, which will celebrate Juneteenth as a state holiday for the first time this year. Juneteenth is a time for joy\, for building community and for talking honestly about our nation’s history. \nDr. Matthew Delmont is the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History at Dartmouth College. An expert on African-American History and the history of Civil Rights\, he is the author four books\, including most recently\, Black Quotidian: Everyday History in African American Newspapers. His next book\, Half American: The Epic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad\, will be published by Viking Books in 2022. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Public Scholar Award to support this research. He regularly shares his research with media outlets\, including the New York Times\, NPR\, The Atlantic and Washington Post. This program is cosponsored by the Newton Human Rights Commission. \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The login information will be sent just after registration closes. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: The Cooking Gene with Michael Twitty
DESCRIPTION:This program is presented in partnership with the Groton Public Library. Please register here. \nFor African American culinary historian Michael W. Twitty there was a giant hole in the story of American cooking as big as the one in the story of most African American families. Putting the microscope on himself\, Michael decided to fully trace out his family history through the story of Southern and American food. Using genetic research\, historic interpretation\, nature study\, heirloom gardening and interviews with contemporary voices in food\, his journey led him back to his family’s origins in West and Central Africa and a front ring seat in the debate over race and food in American life. Join Michael W. Twitty for an engaging evening moderated by Chef Bill\, a Massachusetts-based chef and author. You can follow Michael Twitty on his popular blog\, Afroculinara. \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The login information will be sent just after registration closes. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Shipwrecks of Cape Cod - Stories of Tragedy & Triumph
DESCRIPTION:Cape Cod’s outer beach has always been known for its shipwrecks. Between 1626 and the mid-20th century\, this solitary 40-mile stretch of beach and sandbars saw the demise of over 3\,000 vessels. It’s been said that if all the wrecks were raised\, one could walk from Provincetown to Chatham without getting his or her feet wet. Join Cape Cod historian Don Wilding\, author of the upcoming book\, Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy & Triumph\, for a look back at some of these disasters\, ranging from the 1626 stranding of the Sparrow Hawk to the Eldia in 1984 and more. \nSince the start of the millennium\, Don Wilding has been telling stories of Cape Cod Outer Beach history. An award-winning writer and editor for Massachusetts newspapers since 1985\, Don has contributed the Shore Lore history column for The Cape Codder newspaper of Orleans\, and is the author of two other books\, Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How The Outermost House Inspired a National Seashore\, and A Brief of History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: Kolot Nashim - Jewish Music by Women Composers
DESCRIPTION:For many centuries\, the world of professional music making had been an exclusively male bastion in Western civilization. Female composers and public performers were a rarity in Europe and America and it was nearly impossible for them to have their works published or heard on concert stages. Kol ishah – the voice of a woman – was suppressed. Now we are presenting kolot nashim – the voices of many women\, restoring them to their deserved position. \n“Kolot Nashim\,” a year-long program celebrating the many roles of women in Jewish music\, is dedicated to the memory of Linda Plaut\, the City of Newton’s longtime Director of Cultural Affairs and founder of the Newton Festival of the Arts. The November program\, hosted by Josh Jacobson and Lidiya Yankovskaya\, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, which gave women the right to vote and paid tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. \nPart II of “Kolot Nashim” is hosted by Josh Jacobson and Amy Lieberman. Register here. \nKolot Nashim’s May program includes\n\nInterviews with composers Benjie Ellen Schiller\, with a performance of her “Harninu” (Psalm 81); Elena Kats- Chernin (Sydney\, Australia)\, with a U.S. premiere performance of her Psalm 23; Kirsten and Ken Lampl (Canberra\, Australia)\, with a performance of their “Dirshu.”\nA discussion about Naomi Shemer and performance of her “Shirat Hasavim.”\nAn interview with Achinoam Nini (aka Noa)\, with a new performance of her and Mira Awad’s “There Must Be Another Way.”

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: COVID-19 and Structural Racism
DESCRIPTION:The COVID19 pandemic has laid bare the deep racial and economic inequities that persist in U.S. society\, providing a crucial opportunity for reflection\, reckoning and repair. Structural racism continues to permeate all institutions\, including the U.S. healthcare system\, which has led to inequitable rates of COVID19 infection and death among low-income people and communities of color\, grossly hindering efforts to end the pandemic. \nThrough a discussion of how racism intersects with housing instability and other structural forces to magnify COVID-related risks both locally and at the national level\, Dr. Jen Brody\, MD\, MPH and Sonja Spears JD\, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer for Boston Health Care for the Homeless\, will challenge participants to consider how structural racism threatens the health of all. \nThis program is part of Overdue: Confronting Race and Racism in Newton. \nPlease register here. Registration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The Zoom login information will be sent just after registration closes.
