SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: Live and In Person - Oskar Stenmark
DESCRIPTION:Oskar Stenmark and Alex Pryrodny met in New York City 2014 and formed a strong bond over improvisation\, jazz and folk music. Now\, they are taking their artistic collaboration to a new level by performing live for the first time since 2019. Their focus is now on classical music\, paying homage to Scandinavian composers such as Grieg\, Stenhammar\, Sibelius and Nielsen. This is a project that Oskar originally planned for 2020 but the pandemic slowed down the process significantly\, this will be their first time playing this music together so get ready for an intimate and meaningful concert. \nThis concert will happen outside on our front lawn. Please bring chairs and/or umbrellas if needed. Proper distancing and masks required. \nSaturday\, June 5th | 1pm | $15 for a single ticket\, family tickets $45 for 2 adults and minor children; $7 for SCC members. DESCRIPTION:Cape Cod’s outer beach has always been known for its shipwrecks. Between 1626 and the mid-20th century\, this solitary 40-mile stretch of beach and sandbars saw the demise of over 3\,000 vessels. It’s been said that if all the wrecks were raised\, one could walk from Provincetown to Chatham without getting his or her feet wet. Join Cape Cod historian Don Wilding\, author of the upcoming book\, Shipwrecks of Cape Cod: Stories of Tragedy & Triumph\, for a look back at some of these disasters\, ranging from the 1626 stranding of the Sparrow Hawk to the Eldia in 1984 and more. \nSince the start of the millennium\, Don Wilding has been telling stories of Cape Cod Outer Beach history. An award-winning writer and editor for Massachusetts newspapers since 1985\, Don has contributed the Shore Lore history column for The Cape Codder newspaper of Orleans\, and is the author of two other books\, Henry Beston’s Cape Cod: How The Outermost House Inspired a National Seashore\, and A Brief of History of Eastham: On the Outer Beach of Cape Cod. \nClick here to register.

Female composers and public performers were a rarity in Europe and America and it was nearly impossible for them to have their works published or heard on concert stages. Kol ishah – the voice of a woman – was suppressed. Now we are presenting kolot nashim – the voices of many women\, restoring them to their deserved position. \n“Kolot Nashim\,” a year-long program celebrating the many roles of women in Jewish music\, is dedicated to the memory of Linda Plaut\, the City of Newton’s longtime Director of Cultural Affairs and founder of the Newton Festival of the Arts. The November program\, hosted by Josh Jacobson and Lidiya Yankovskaya\, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, which gave women the right to vote and paid tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. \nPart II of “Kolot Nashim” is hosted by Josh Jacobson and Amy Lieberman. Structural racism continues to permeate all institutions\, including the U.S. healthcare system\, which has led to inequitable rates of COVID19 infection and death among low-income people and communities of color\, grossly hindering efforts to end the pandemic. \nThrough a discussion of how racism intersects with housing instability and other structural forces to magnify COVID-related risks both locally and at the national level\, Dr. Jen Brody\, MD\, MPH and Sonja Spears JD\, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer for Boston Health Care for the Homeless\, will challenge participants to consider how structural racism threatens the health of all. \nThis program is part of Overdue: Confronting Race and Racism in Newton. \nPlease register here. SUMMARY:Newton Free Library: The Asian American Experience - Reflections of an Historian and an Artist
DESCRIPTION:The session will deepen our understanding of the Asian American experience through an interactive dialogue Lisong Liu and Wen-ti Tsen. They will cover: \n\nThe historical perspective of Asian immigrants\nThe complexities of the Asian-American experience\nAsian cultural heritage\, community activism against racism and the cross-racial solidarity through art\n\nLisong Liu is professor of history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an associate in research at the Harvard Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. He teaches Asian American history\, East Asian history\, world history and U.S.-China relations. His current research is about Chinese American history in the Greater Boston Area. He has been active in the local community\, and he is also passionate about developing exchange programs for American students to travel and study in China. \nWen-ti Tsen is a painter and public artist. Born in China\, he lived in Paris and London before coming to the U.S. to study at Boston Museum School. Since the mid-1970s\, he has been engaged in making art that explores cultural connections in the forms of personal paintings\, public site sculptures and community art projects. \nThis program is cosponsored by the Newton Human Rights Commission\, CAAN (Chinese American Association of Newton) and NESN (Newton Education Support Network). \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. Professor Browne-Marshall will examine laws posing challenges to American voters — especially African-Americans — from enslavement and woman’s suffrage through current controversies of voter suppression. She will also look ahead to challenges that future voters are likely to face\, especially after the tumultuous 2020 election.
