SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Twisted Sisters - Killer Hurricanes of the 1950s
DESCRIPTION:Join Eamon McCarthy Earls for a wild ride as he dives into the history of the Twisted Sisters\, four storms – Carol\, Edna\, Connie and Diane – that hammered New England and the Northeast all in a period of 12 months during the 1950s. These storms brought devastating winds\, pounding waves\, record tidal surges and floods of nearly Biblical proportions! Today\, despite the massive seawalls and flood control projects built in the wake of the Twisted Sisters\, the question is\, will it happen again? \nEamon McCarthy Earls is an author of multiple books on regional history. He studied geology and history at UMASS-Amherst\, served for three years as a Town Council member in his hometown of Franklin\, Massachusetts\, and is now completing a law degree at George Mason University in Arlington\, Virginia. \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The login information will be sent just after registration closes. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Prohibition Wine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an author talk with TAB columnist and community activist\, Marian Leah Knapp. Her new book\, Prohibition Wine: A True Story of One Woman’s Daring in Twentieth-Century America\, tells the story of how Marian’s  grandmother\, Rebecca Goldberg—a Jewish immigrant from the Russian Empire living in rural Massachusetts―lost her husband to a railroad accident. The tragedy left her alone with six children to raise. The book follows Rebecca through the 1920s as she transforms her egg delivery service into a more lucrative endeavor: bootlegging. \nFor five years\, Rebecca successfully provided for her customers in secret as a means to support her family until she was caught. Knapp’s story chronicles how the lower class experienced the Prohibition\, a side not always represented in popular media from the era. Rebecca’s life as a poor Jewish immigrant in Massachusetts holds a mirror to struggles still relevant today including disparities in access to education and healthcare and ongoing discrimination. This program is cosponsored by the City of Newton Department of Senior Services. \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The login information will be sent just after registration closes. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.

SUMMARY:Festival of the Arts: Pro Arte Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, enjoy a concert from Pro Arte’s Quartet. \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The quartet will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Lisa Goddard & Colin Davis\, violins\, Anne Black\, viola\, and Steve Laven\, cello.

SUMMARY:Festival of the Arts: Newton Nomadic Theatre's Story Slam
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, the Newton Nomadic Theatre presents their next Story Slam. \nNNT Story Slams have become legendary in Newton featuring everyone from celebrities\, politicians\, to next door neighbors. They provide the light\, you provide the face and the story.   The idea is simple – a community storytelling night\, based loosely on NPR’s very popular Moth Radio Hour. Come to hear the stories\, or if you’re game\, throw your name in the hat to tell a story. They should be related to the night’s theme.  They should be approximately 5 minutes long\, and have happened to you.  Beyond that\, it’s up to you – funny\, moving\, poignant\, insane\, ridiculous whatever you like.
