SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: A Choral Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:This season\, in response to the alarming rise in racism\, antisemitism\, and other forms of prejudice\, we are even more committed to using our resources to expose our audiences (and ourselves) to music representing different cultures\, ethnicities\, and ways of thinking. With that in mind\, we are presenting an online series called “A Choral Rainbow\,” featuring video performances and conversations with the conductors of choruses from diverse and under-represented communities. \nOur first program\, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Israel to New England\, will feature David Hodgkins\, conductor of Coro Allegro—Boston’s LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus; Micah Hendler\, conductor of The Jerusalem Youth Chorus—a choral and dialogue program for Palestinian and Israeli youth in Jerusalem; and Diana Sáez\, a leading specialist in the field of Latin American choral music. Watch this promo! \nThis is the first of a three-part program. Future programs will be held in February and April 2022. Click here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: Jazz on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Tap dance and jazz have a long and intertwined history. From the prohibition on musical instruments during the era of slavery\, which prompted the enslaved African-Americans to find ingenious ways to use their bodies as percussion instruments\, to the early 20th century New York City where Irish and African-American styles of dancing met and enriched each other while innovative popular musical styles were created through the fusion of cultures\, to the film era and the groundbreaking work of Fred Astaire – these two art forms developed side-by-side\, even if at some point their paths have grown somewhat apart. \nTap dancer Alex MacDonald – the original tap soloist and choreographer for the wildly popular vintage jazz band\, Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox – and pianist and improviser Alex Pryrodny present a fun and educational program that pays tribute to the historical roots of each discipline while fusing them in new ways\, with creativity and lightning speed communication of both virtuoso performers of full display. Get your hands clapping and your feet moving to the rhythms and sounds of “Jazz on Tap!” \n**please note that advanced registration\, masks\, and proof of vaccination are required for this event** \nSaturday\, November 13th | 1pm | register here \nPresented in partnership with Newton at Home.

SUMMARY:Festival of the Arts: Pro Arte Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, enjoy a concert from Pro Arte’s Quartet. \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The quartet will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Lisa Goddard & Colin Davis\, violins\, Anne Black\, viola\, and Steve Laven\, cello.

SUMMARY:Festival of the Arts: Newton Baroque
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, enjoy a concert from Newton Baroque. \nNewton Baroque took a spectacular leap onto the national stage in May 2014 when they performed three exciting innovative programs as a featured ensemble at the American Bach Society annual convention at Kenyon College in Ohio\, garnering an overwhelming response from some of the most knowledgeable Bach scholars in the world. \nDepending on the requirements of the chosen repertoire\, Newton Baroque draws on its roster of musicians who work frequently with the group\, comprising some of the leading Baroque specialists both nationally and internationally. They have also appeared numerous times on Boston’s SoHIP concert series\, on WGBH Radio\, Boston\, and on various concert series in New York City. Newton Baroque is a recipient of NCC grants.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Spring Series: Salon 3
DESCRIPTION:The Spring Salon Series takes place entirely online. Concerts premiere at 8pm on Thursday night and are available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \nDance in Celebration and Reflection \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. We will come together in contemplation of the horrors of slavery and its lasting legacy\, in celebration of emancipation\, and in honor of the continuing work that must be done to eradicate white supremacy. We will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. \nProgram: \nPRICE String Quartet No. 2 in A minor \nDOROTHY RUDD MOORE Modes \nWYNTON MARSALIS At the Octoroon Balls \n
