SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Spring Series: Salon 3
DESCRIPTION:The Spring Salon Series takes place entirely online. Concerts premiere at 8pm on Thursday night and are available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \nDance in Celebration and Reflection \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. We will come together in contemplation of the horrors of slavery and its lasting legacy\, in celebration of emancipation\, and in honor of the continuing work that must be done to eradicate white supremacy. We will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. \nProgram: \nPRICE String Quartet No. 2 in A minor \nDOROTHY RUDD MOORE Modes \nWYNTON MARSALIS At the Octoroon Balls \n

SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: Kolot Nashim - Jewish Music by Women Composers
DESCRIPTION:For many centuries\, the world of professional music making had been an exclusively male bastion in Western civilization. Female composers and public performers were a rarity in Europe and America and it was nearly impossible for them to have their works published or heard on concert stages. Kol ishah – the voice of a woman – was suppressed. Now we are presenting kolot nashim – the voices of many women\, restoring them to their deserved position. \n“Kolot Nashim\,” a year-long program celebrating the many roles of women in Jewish music\, is dedicated to the memory of Linda Plaut\, the City of Newton’s longtime Director of Cultural Affairs and founder of the Newton Festival of the Arts. The November program\, hosted by Josh Jacobson and Lidiya Yankovskaya\, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, which gave women the right to vote and paid tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. \nPart II of “Kolot Nashim” is hosted by Josh Jacobson and Amy Lieberman. Register here. \nKolot Nashim’s May program includes\n\nInterviews with composers Benjie Ellen Schiller\, with a performance of her “Harninu” (Psalm 81); Elena Kats- Chernin (Sydney\, Australia)\, with a U.S. premiere performance of her Psalm 23; Kirsten and Ken Lampl (Canberra\, Australia)\, with a performance of their “Dirshu.”\nA discussion about Naomi Shemer and performance of her “Shirat Hasavim.”\nAn interview with Achinoam Nini (aka Noa)\, with a new performance of her and Mira Awad’s “There Must Be Another Way.”

SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music presents: Black Bodies and Black Voices
DESCRIPTION:AEM’s second in a Series of Free Lectures\nBlack Bodies and Black Voices: Gio. Buonaccorsi\, an enslaved Black singer at the Medici Court\, with Emily Wilbourne \nOn the 14th of October\, 1662\, the opera impresario Vettor Grimani Calergi wrote from Venice to Prince Mattias de’ Medici in Florence to discuss the singers for the upcoming opera season. He put in a particular plea in order that the Medici Cardinal’s black slave could participate. Above and beyond the moor’s “esteemed virtue” as a singer\, Grimani professed interest in the novelty of his character\, explaining that what perhaps in Florence had become “ordinary\,” would be “new\, and never before seen” on the Venetian stage. This singer is identifiable as Giovannino Buonaccorsi\, and his presence in Florence can be traced through a surprisingly rich archive of payment records\, libretti\, scores\, descriptions\, letters\, costume designs\, poetry\, as well as a remarkable double portrait: Baldassarre Franceschini’s Ritratto di suanatore di liuto con cantore moro (ca. 1662). In this paper I read this painting closely\, placing it alongside new archival documents to think about the ways in which black performance was normalized in mid-century Florence and the means by which blackness signified in relation to slavery and servitude\, shaping Giovannino’s access to performance opportunities on and offstage. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: Celebrate Louis Lewandowski's 200th Birthday!
DESCRIPTION:On March 14\, Zamir will celebrate the music of the great German composer\, Louis Lewandowski\, born on this date (the first day of the Jewish month of Nisan) in 1821. Lewandowski is arguably the greatest synagogue composer of the 19th century. His great choral works live on today not only in synagogues\, but also on concert stages around the world. And his popular liturgical melodies are still sung today\, even though few realize that he wrote them. \nOur program includes video performances of some of Lewandowski’s most beloved choral classics. We also have interviews with cantors and conductors in the United States and Lewandowski’s Berlin. You will hear the “voice of Lewandowski” speaking about his music. And there will be toasts\, too\, so bring your stein of beer and watch this awesome tribute to a great man. Not to be missed! \nThis program is free but registration is required and a donation is strongly encouraged! Learn more at Zamir’s website.
