SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Fall Salon Series: Salon 1
DESCRIPTION:The Fall Salon Series takes place entirely online. Each of these six concerts premieres at 8pm on Thursday night and will be available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \n\nSalon 1:\nLyrical\, tender\, charming\, warm\, majestic… These are a just a few words that apply equally to Florence Price’s String Quartet in G Major and Beethoven’s Opus 127 Quartet in E Flat Major. Though separated by a century\, each groundbreaking genius overcame adversity to create these two works which express profound humanity and beauty. Beethoven struggled to compose his Op. 127 through illness and complete deafness; Price (perhaps the most notable African American women composers of the early 20th Century) composed her gorgeous G Major Quartet despite enduring systemic racial disadvantages. Through these works\, both artists show us a roadmap to beauty\, triumph\, and our better selves.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlorence PRICE\, String Quartet in G Major\n\nBEETHOVEN String Quartet in E-flat Major\, op. 127\n\n  \nMUSICIANS\nLiana Zaretsky\, violin\nJulia Cash\, violin\nEmily Rome\, viola\nLeo Eguchi\, cello

SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music online: Tantalizing Telemann Technicalities
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AEM ONLINE classes each weekend! Register for any number of sessions – classes are $25 per session. Registration opens each Monday for the weekend classes! Click here for more information. \nTantalizing Telemann Technicalities with Sarah Cantor \nWe will use the Telemann F Major duet as technical inspiration for this class. The high F’s give us opportunities to work on blowing and thumb position for high notes. The scale passages are perfect for finger coordination. The repeated sequences of 16th notes beg us to make tonguing syllable decisions. The long passages give us a chance to practice breath control. The cadential trills offer a chance to review trill fingerings and incorporate tasteful appoggiatura’s. Since technique should always serve the music and not the other way around\, we will make music playing the duet together.\nYou can download the music and play the duet with Sarah on her music-minus-one video here.

SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music online: It's All About the Bass
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AEM ONLINE classes each weekend! Register for any number of sessions – classes are $25 per session. Registration opens each Monday for the weekend classes! Click here for more information. \nIt’s All About the Bass: Learn to add Drones and Chords to your Favorite Early Music Tunes with Tina Chancey\nWhether you’re playing a 13th-century cantiga\, a Renaissance dance tune by Arbeau\, or one of D’Urfey’s Pills to Purge Melancholy\, it always helps to fill out the piece by adding some chords and double stops. We viol players are lucky to have six strings\, a rounded bridge\, and and two and a half octave range—we’ve got lots of sounds at our disposal.\nEach different era of music has its own accompaniment techniques. In this class you’ll learn to play sustained and rhythmic drones whether you play the tune yourself or accompany a singer; to find different versions of the most common chords on your instrument and how to decide what chords to use\, to create arrangements with introductions and interludes that combine playing the tune and supporting chords\, and to create obbligato bass parts from a simple ground bass.

SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music online: Ex Tempore Playing - A Gateway to Early Medieval Improvisation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AEM ONLINE classes each weekend! Register for any number of sessions – classes are $25 per session. Registration opens each Monday for the weekend classes! Click here for more information. \nEx Tempore Playing: A Gateway to Early Medieval Improvisation with Norbert Rodenkirchen\nSurviving information about Medieval instrumental improvisation practice is rare and fragmentary. Based on a combination of intensive source studies and a personalized approach to Medieval monodic improvisation Norbert Rodenkirchen – Sequentia´s flautist – offers a practical workshop on „ad hoc“ modal invention. Besides presenting some easy new exercises Norbert will also introduce selected original didactical tools from Medieval cathedral schools. We will try out original modal patterns and memorization formulae from the 11th to 13th century to find a fresh and profound way to invent our own estampies and ductiae\, just like students in Medieval times. All musical materials will be presented in easy\, modern notation. The aim will be to explore our own melodic inventions deriving from these notes\, not just to play what is written. SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music online: In Nomine - The Viol PLayer's Favorite Chant
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AEM ONLINE classes each weekend! Register for any number of sessions – classes are $25 per session. Registration opens each Monday for the weekend classes! Click here for more information. \nIn Nomine: The Viol PLayer’s Favorite Chant with Rosamund Morley\nThe foundation of a uniquely English consort form is a beautiful chant melody hidden in the “Benedictus” movement of a 6-part Taverner mass. For 150 years\, from Taverner to Purcell\, many English composers wrote beautiful polyphonic music based on this chant. In this class\, less experienced viol players will have a chance to use the lovely In Nomine chant tune as the basis for a series of exercises applicable to all sizes of viol\, and\, technology permitting\, will experience the joys of playing the In Nomine line in a consort piece or two! Geared to: the fairly new viol player\, but all viols are welcome to join! Pitch: A=415.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Fall Salon Series: Salon 2
DESCRIPTION:The Fall Salon Series takes place entirely online. Each of these six concerts premieres at 8pm on Thursday night and will be available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \n\nSalon 2:\n \nAfter playing an enjoyable summer salon together\, Lisa Goddard\, Colin Davis\, Anne Black\, and Steven Laven return with a new program. Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 95\, known as the “Serioso” quartet\, is a compact piece on the cusp of Beethoven’s late work\, which pushes the boundaries of form and harmony further than ever before. William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartette is a musical portrait of three of the composer’s friends. Known as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers\,” Still’s accomplishments include over 200 compositions\, being the first African American to conduct a major orchestra (the L.A. Philharmonic)\, and collaborating with prominent literary and cultural figures in the Harlem Renaissance movement. The concert also includes James Lee III’s Abraham’s Sons (in Memoriam Trayvon Martin). Intense and dramatic\, this piece is dedicated to the family of Trayvon Martin. Mr. Lee musically depicts the scope of suffering and mourning inferred by the title of this elegiac solo piece. From one of Pro Arte’s favorite living composers\, Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 1 is the first in a series of virtuosic pieces for various solo instruments\, which she premiered herself on violin in 2014.\n  \nBEETHOVEN String Quartet in F minor\, op. 95 “Quartetto Serioso”\nWilliam Grant STILL Lyric Quartette\nJames LEE Abraham’s Sons (In Memoriam: Trayvon Martin)\nJessie MONTGOMERY Rhapsody No. 1\n  \nMUSICIANS\nLisa Goddard\, violin\nColin Davis\, violin\nAnne Black\, viola\nSteve Laven\, cello

SUMMARY:Pro Arte's Fall Salon Series: Salon 3
DESCRIPTION:The Fall Salon Series takes place entirely online. Each of these six concerts premieres at 8pm on Thursday night and will be available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere\, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets. \nSalon 3: \nPlease join the principal winds of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra for a fabulous program of quintet music\, all by American composers. We are so excited about this concert! We will travel through a couple of standards\, the gorgeous Summer Music by Samuel Barber\, the perfectly danceable Partita by Irving Fine\, and also visit a couple of pieces that may be less familiar. Umoja\, meaning unity\, written by one of our top young American composers\, Valerie Coleman\, and is more timely than ever. We go back in time a bit with an arrangement of Summerland by the formidable and under performed William Grant Still\, originally written for solo piano in 1936. And we couldn’t resist throwing in a nod to Paris with some Gershwin just for fun\, because who doesn’t need some fun these days? We hope you’ll enjoy the journey as much as we will.\n\n\nBARBER Summer Music\, Op. 31\nFINE Partita\nValerie COLEMAN Umoja\nSTILL Summerland\nGERSHWIN An American in Paris\n\n\nMUSICIANS\nAnn Bobo\, flute\nNancy Dimock\, oboe\nIan Greitzer\, clarinet\nRon Haroutunian\, bassoon\nRobert Marlatt\, horn
