SUMMARY:Newton Baroque presents Harmonia artificioso-ariosa: Music for two violins and continuo by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber
DESCRIPTION:The day is fast approaching when Newton Baroque will take a huge leap and play our first concert at a major international festival. On June 9\, we will play an all-Biber program at the Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg\, Germany. Before we leave for Germany\, we’ll play the concert on May 9 and 10 for our friends in Boston and Newton. The program consists entirely of Partie for two violins and continuo from Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber’s Harmonia artificioso-ariosa. Each of the four Partie on the concert requires a different scordatura tuning\, and they are arguably the most astounding works for two violins and continuo from the 17th century. You may have heard us play a few of these pieces before; over the last two years\, we have programmed isolated sonatas from the set to prepare for our event in Regensburg\, and now you can hear the full program in its entirety. If there were ever a do-not-miss concert\, it is this one. These pieces by Biber are incredibly challenging technically\, but we have been preparing for a long time\, and they are polished and ready. Also\, we have been living with them long enough now to engage in even more than our usual amount of risk-taking\, and I believe you will be in for a tremendous show. Susanna and Christina are among the best in the world at playing this music\, and Cullen and Andrus are in the perfect continuo groove to underpin the violin fireworks.

SUMMARY:Commonwealth Chorale presents Community and Connection
DESCRIPTION:Community and Connection\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday May 18\, 2025 at 4pm\nAaron Copland\, selections from Old American Songs\nNathaniel Dett\, The Chariot Jubilee\nAlice Parker\, folk song and spiritual arrangements\nFred VanNess\, tenor\nDavid McFerrin\, baritone\nwith chamber instrumental ensemble and pianoA Commonwealth Composer Concert \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExperience community and connection through the diversity of American folk songs! We can all connect on different levels with what folk songs are about: work and labor\, losing or gaining freedom\, personal and social tragedies\, joy and romance\, historical events and movements\, faith and spirituality\, social or political issues\, and the ups and downs of everyday life. Folk songs also provide connections across generations\, by celebrating cultural and ethnic heritages or inspiring social activists. The music of Copland\, Dett\, and Parker explores many of these themes. \nIn his Old American Songs Aaron Copland arranges American folk songs that feature the pioneer experience\, the vastness of America’s natural landscapes\, political commentary\, and the simple pleasure of entertaining children. Some consider his arrangements to be the characteristic sound of American music. \nNathaniel Dett’s significant and diverse musical legacy includes arrangements of African American spirituals. These arrangements fuse the simple\, profound messages of these uniquely American folk songs with the European romantic classical music tradition. Inspired by the spiritual Swing Low Sweet Chariot\, Dett’s The Chariot Jubileeexemplifies his blending of these two traditions. The interplay between the chorus and the tenor soloist\, along with the dynamic orchestration\, creates a powerful and uplifting musical experience celebrating our common humanity. \nThis season’s Commonwealth Composer is Alice Parker. In her many decades as a composer\, she composed a wide variety of music. However\, she is especially well known for her classic arrangements of American folk songs\, folk hymns\, and spirituals. Her love of family and community is reflected in these arrangements. As she told NewMusic USA\, “When we sing something perfectly lovely together … and it really clicks\, you have this marvelous feeling of brotherhood in the room. We are all human beings. We are all feeling this emotion together at the same time. And this is uniting us. We are not separate.” \nJoin us to experience music representing a rich mix of collective memory\, cultural identity\, and emotional expression\, reflecting the diverse and evolving narrative of American life. \n\n\nFred VanNess\, tenor \n\nDavid McFerrin\, baritone

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our next house concert with singer-songwriter Sam Robbins. This is a rare opportunity to be up close with a-soon-to-be-famous contemporary folk musician! Cam Olver will be opening with his unique fingerstyle guitar. You will be welcome in our friendly home. Drinks\, snacks\, and plenty of joy provided as we connect through music to the larger circles among us. \nSam Robbins is often described as an “old soul singer songwriter” whose music evokes singer songwriters like James Taylor and Jackson Browne. Robbins has gained a reputation as one of the brightest rising stars in the national folk music community. \nhttps://samrobbinsmusic.com/home \nCam Olver\, a Newton based solo guitarist specializing in fingerstyle will be opening.
