SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with YoAhn Han
DESCRIPTION:Paper cutting (YUPO) with a concept of “Negative and Positive” space and paper collages with diaphanous patterns\nYoAhn Han is a Korean painter based in Boston whose work is a visual dialogue between suppression and desire\, a duality which speaks to both his experience of cerebral arteriovenous malformation and to his bifurcated cultural identity. \nHe received his MFA 2D at Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, and obtained a Bachelors of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). YoAhn’s work has been shown internationally\, in the United States\, South Korea\, and the Netherlands. Recent solo shows include “Botanical Rhapsody” at Chase Young Gallery in Boston\, “Metamorphic Desire” at Essex Art center (Jan\, 2018)\, “My Princess\, Bari” at ARTMORA Gallery in New York\, “Alluring Confinement” at the Artlery 160 in Boston\, and 매혹적 가두어짐 (Enchanting Box) in Seoul\, Korea. His work has also been exhibited in several group shows including “Summer Palette” at Chase Young Gallery in Boston\, Seventh Juried Exhibition at Prince Street Gallery in New York\, ART BLOSSM Exhibition at ARTMORA NJ\, and Sanqtuary at Distillery Gallery in Boston. \nYoAhn has also participated in the annual MassArt Auctions and the 2016 Busan international Art fair. \nClick here for Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Historic Newton presents: Half American - The Epic Story of Black Americans Fighting WWII
DESCRIPTION:For Black Americans World War II was about not only America’s standing in the world but also about how much actual freedom would exist in the United States. Black troops fought bravely in combat and they formed the backbone of the U.S. military’s supply effort\, all while fighting in a segregated military. Black veterans returned from the war and kept fighting white supremacy at home. Drawing on his upcoming book\, historian Matthew Delmont explains how World War II raised questions regarding race and democracy that remain unanswered more than seventy years later. This is an inspiring history of bravery and patriotism in the face of unfathomable racism. SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Racism Not Race with Joseph L. Graves and Alan H. Goodman
DESCRIPTION:Authors Joseph L. Graves Jr. and Alan H. Goodman will discuss their book Racism\, Not Race: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions. The science on race is clear. Common categories like “Black\,” “White\,” and “Asian” do not represent genetic differences among groups. But if race is a pernicious fiction according to natural science\, it is all too significant in the day-to-day lives of racialized people across the globe. Drawing on evidence from both natural and social science\, Graves and Goodman dismantle the myth of gene-based racial difference and demonstrate that the ideology of racism created races. Racism\, Not Race shows readers why antiracist principles are both just and backed by sound science. \nJoseph L. Graves Jr. is a professor in the Department of Biology at North Carolina A&T State University. He is a fellow of the Council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His books include The Emperor’s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium (2001) and The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America (2005). \nAlan H. Goodman is a professor of biological anthropology at Hampshire College and a former vice president for academic affairs. He is a past president of the American Anthropological Association and codirects its public education project on race. Join the awards reception via Zoom\, Friday\, Feb. 4\, 7:00 p.m. This virtual awards reception will feature prizes\, judges’ comments\, artists’ responses\, as well as an introduction to videos about participants in the Roxbury artist group. DESCRIPTION:Join the Newton Free Library for an evening with Jerald Walker.  He will read excerpts from and discuss his new book titled How to Make a Slave and Other Essays\, which was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award in nonfiction and winner of the 2020 Massachusetts Book Award in nonfiction. A Q and A will follow. In addition to How to Make a Slave\, Jerald Walker is the author of two memoirs\, Street Shadows and The World in Flames. His work has appeared in publications such as The Harvard Review\, Creative Nonfiction\, The Iowa Review\, and Mother Jones\, and has been widely anthologized\, including five times in The Best American Essays series. Recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, a Pushcart Prize\, and the L.L. She became the conscience of our nation as she led the fight for freedom and equality during the ‘60s and ‘70s. SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with Marjorie Kaye | Sculptural Painting
DESCRIPTION:Marjorie Kaye has lived in the Boston area for most of her life\, with stops along the way in Syracuse\, NY to earn her BFA in Painting\, as well as New York City in the 80s. \nShe is a painter and sculptor. Her work has been an exploration of opposites: form and color; organic and geometric; precision and chaos. Colorful and bold\, her gouache paintings and sculptures are kinetic and energetic. Her work has been reviewed in many publications including the Boston Globe and ArtScope Magazine and has been shown extensively both locally and nationally\, including galleries such as Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, Atlantic Works Gallery in East Boston\, Harbor Gallery\, UMass Boston\, and the Walter Wickiser Gallery in NYC. She was a 2016 winner of the Lillian Orlowsky/William Freed Foundation Grant from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and was included in a group exhibition in their galleries. Also\, Ms. Kaye was named a finalist in the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Awards in Painting. \nKaye is the founder of Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, MA\, a large artist-run gallery featuring over 39 artists from Boston and beyond. She was the director of that space from 2009 – 2017\, as well as the owner. The gallery has transitioned into a non-profit and Ms. Kaye is remaining as Director. Some past projects also include the web-based Caladan Gallery\, which ran for 10 years and exhibited hundreds of artists from all over the world\, and the Lawrence\, MA Gallery 181\, which enhanced the community with the exhibition of local\, national\, and international artists. \nThe Zoom link is found here.
