SUMMARY:SCC presents Gunnar Widforss
DESCRIPTION:GUNNAR WIDFORSS–PAINTER OF THE NATIONAL PARKS\n\nThrough the Roaring Twenties and the first half of the Great Depression\, the Swedish-born landscape painter Gunnar Widforss (1879-1934) focused his discerning eye and passionate energy on the national parks of the American West. Because of Widforss’ untimely death at only age 55\, and\nbecause the rise of modernism in the early-twentieth century consigned many highly skilled realistic painters to obscurity\, Widforss’ legacy is largely unknown today. The amiable Swede led a bohemian life in search of beautiful landscapes to paint. Widforss dressed formally as he worked and always attracted wonder-struck onlookers when he painted in Yosemite Valley\, on the rim of Grand Canyon and the other locations he favored in the national parks. Park Service friends such as Ansel Hall and Stephen Mather as well as tourists marveled at the accuracy of his painting and the way in which he was able to capture the dramatic landscapes. Widforss never resorted to sentimental or romanticized depictions\, so prevalent in depictions of western subjects. He very well may be viewed as one of the greatest artists to paint the West and his obscurity is a paradox. The story of Widforss’ life and work is one of great triumph in realistic painting\, and the tragedy of his anonymity and death is a compelling story of a Swedish expatriate who fell in love with the landscapes of the American West. \nToday\, Widforss’ work is known only to a small number of dedicated collectors\, the descendants of his family and friends\, and those who discover his gem-like paintings when they visit the national parks he depicted. \nCurator and author Alan Petersen has published a catalogue raisonné of Widforss’ works and is nearing completion of a monograph on the artist’s fascinating life and work. \nSunday\, October 16th | 1pm | $8 suggested donation | register here \nABOUT ALAN: Alan recently published a catalogue raisonné of works by Swedish-American artist Gunnar Widforss that currently lists nearly 1\,300 paintings. He is continuing work on a monograph on Widforss’ fascinating life and art. Alan has also published a number of articles on the artist and in 2018 co-curated an exhibition of the artist’s work in Ljungby\, Sweden. \nAlan recently retired from a faculty position at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff where he taught art history\, drawing\, painting\, and courses pertaining to the Colorado Plateau for thirty years. His own paintings have their source in the light\, space and landforms of the Colorado Plateau\, and explore the formal relationships between color and pictorial space. He is also engaged in a major project that involves mapping and drawing the geological sources of uranium within Grand Canyon. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents a Benefit for Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte musicians come together to give a concert in benefit of those suffering in Ukraine. Multiple different groups of performers donate their services to perform a moving evening of music. This event is presented for a suggested donation of $50. SUMMARY:Amherst Early Music presents Early Notation Classes with Annette Bauer!
DESCRIPTION:Early Notation with Annette Bauer\nPitch: 440\, Open to all instrumentalists and singers \n“Machaut and the Ars Nova – I”\nWednesdays 5:30-6:45pm EST: September 14\, 21\, 28 & October 5\nThe music of Guillaume Machaut (ca. 1300-1377) offers a wonderful opportunity to study the style\, forms\, and musical notation used in the ars nova in France. In particular\, the manuscripts containing Machaut’s compositions are true works of art\, carefully compiled – some possibly under direct supervision of the composer himself – and beautifully illuminated. The first of two sessions on Machaut will focus on secular compositions in one\, two\, and three parts. \n“Machaut and the Ars Nova – II”\nWednesdays 5:30-6:45pm EST: October 19\, 26 & November 2\, 9\nThe music of Guillaume Machaut (ca. The second of two sessions on Machaut will feature movements from the Messe de Nostre Dame\, which is the first complete polyphonic mass cycle composed in the history of European music\, alongside a selection of his secular compositions. \nThe upcoming online notation sessions in 2022/2023 focus on music of the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries\, including an exploration of ars nova mensural notation\, an introduction to the notation of the Italian trecento\, and a look at the merging of these two distinct practices and musical styles at the turn of the fifteenth century. Prerequisite is the introductory class to mensural notation\, or equivalent experience. (If you are not sure\, please contact Annette). \nSign up here! \nImage: Douce Dame Jolie Machaut A f.482v

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents Stage Fright: Performance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:or the past three years you’ve been hard at work in your homes making music\, writing poems\, dancing in your kitchens\, and so much more. Making by yourself can be therapeutic but maybe you miss the community\, the adrenaline\, and the conversation that happens around a performance. This is a space where you can workshop\, showcase\, experiment\, and provide/receive feedback with other performers in the area. From lo-fi beats to spoken word poetry and more; whatever your personal output is we’d love to have you! In an open mic format\, sign up for a 20 minute (or more) spot providing what you might need for tech/set up\, and let us know if you would like feedback or just to perform. Adults and students ages 16+ are welcome to participate. \n  \nStage Fright is for performers who want more experience performing for an audience with the opportunity to talk to other performers about how they prepare before a show/performance. \nMilo has been facilitating open mic style events for many years and he is excited to bring it to the New Art Center.
