SUMMARY:Newton Theatre Company Presents "The Guys"
DESCRIPTION:“We all travel in our track… after 9/11\, all over the city\, people were jumping tracks”. In post 9/11 New York City\, Nick\, a fire captain\, and Joan\, a writer\, share their experiences and lean on each other as they write eight eulogies for fallen firefighters. These two strangers navigate their grief through humor\, compassion\, the written word – and the power of human connection. “We have no idea what wonders lie hidden in the people around us.” \nBased on a true story\, The Guys follows two individuals less than two weeks after the September 11 attacks – New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them\, an editor named Joan\, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick\, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together\, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles\, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process\, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief\, they draw on humor\, tango\, the appreciation of craft in all its forms-and the enduring bonds of common humanity. \nFirst performed in a hit off-off-Broadway production starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray\, The Guys is a timeless drama about the surprising truths people can discover in ordinary lives\, and the connections we make with others and ourselves in times of tragedy. \nDirected by Newton Public Schools Theatre Teacher Olivia Moriarty\, these performances feature NPS Theatre Teachers Paige Perkinson (Joan) and Jeff Knoedler (Nick). Special ticket pricing is available for teachers and first responders.

SUMMARY:Sheffield Chamber Players presents Open Arms\, Open Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Players open Season 11 with two works—written almost 200 years apart and on different continents— that tap the deepest corners of your soul while lifting you out of the everyday and into the sublime. Shelley Washington’s 2019 String Quartet Middleground overlays rhythmic grooves with sweeping melodies passing between the four voices. Schubert’s transcendent cello quintet shares some compositional DNA with the Washington\, particularly an incredible emotional sincerity\, and the ability to lift the listener onto beautiful waves as though being carried through the twists and turns of life. Schubert wrote this work in the late summer and early fall of 1828\, and it reflects the freedom and joy of summer\, alongside autumnal melancholy that perhaps hints at Schubert’s all too short life coming to an end. ~ Sasha Callahan \nTickets Are Available Here

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Treasures of Youth and Age
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte’s 47th season opens with Louisville-based conductor Gabriel Lefkowitz leading an expressive program for the strings\, principal clarinetist Ian Greitzer\, and principal bassoonist Ronald Haroutunian. In her Canyons\, from 2018\, Tanner Porter paints nature at its most jagged\, imposing\, and majestic. A work like no other\, Richard Strauss’s vibrant Duett-Concertino features writing so organic\, its solo clarinet and bassoon seem to become living\, breathing characters. Although Josef Suk’s warm Serenade was a departure from his melancholy style\, it won him early critical acclaim from Johannes Brahms and positioned him as the successor to his teacher Antonín Dvořák\, and it brings this first concert to an elegant close.

SUMMARY:West Newton Cinema presents Behind the Screen: ANORA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at West Newton Cinema for a special screening of Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed film “Anora” followed by a panel discussion featuring Lisa Goldblatt Grace\, Malcolm Turvey\, and Ty Burr. \nAnora* is a comedy-drama about a New York exotic dancer (Mikey Madison) whose involvement with the son of a Russian oligarch (Paul Weissman) leads to a farcical odyssey across Brooklyn and a hard reckoning. The film won the top prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and is already being hailed as one of the year’s best movies—but is its portrait of sex work empathetic or exploitive\, a clear-eyed acknowledgment of the realities or just another Hollywood fairy tale? \nPanelists will include Lisa Goldblatt Grace\, Co-Executive Director of My Life My Choice\, a national organization fighting the commercial sexual exploitation of women and children\, and Professor Malcolm Turvey\, founding Director of Tufts University’s Film and Media Studies Program and a distinguished scholar of film theory and aesthetics. The event will be moderated by Ty Burr\, the Boston Globe’s film critic from 2002 to 2021 and currently reviewing movies for The Washington Post and in the subscription newsletter Ty Burr’s Watch List. \n*Content Note: Anora is an R-rated film\, with rough language and scenes of nudity and graphic sexuality.
