DESCRIPTION:The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a fiddle trio that masterfully blends the traditions of Norway\, Sweden\, and the Shetland Islands. Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway)\, Anders Hall (Sweden)\, and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands)\, have swiftly gained a reputation for their gripping and unique blend of fiddle music since the inception of the Bloc in early 2009. They maintain a firm focus on the traditions of their home\, while developing a sound that has been described as “meaningful\,””intense\,” and “invigorating.” Their clever use of harmony\, rhythm\, riffs\, and bass lines creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled but at the same time dumbfounded that the sound only comes from three fiddles. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance of late 18th and early 19th century Spanish music; a relatively unexplored niche in the world of early music. Soprano Maria Alejandra Montero will perform a set of seguidillas for voice and harpsichord by composer José Lidon. The musicians will also explore romantic-era repertoire for the guitar and flute\, arranged for harpsichord and traverso. \nThe concert is being presented in memory of Barbara Hyatt whose family has made a significant contribution to the library for the upgrade of the sound system in Druker Auditorium. Barbara’s love of the library inspired this gift and we are so grateful for the family’s support. \n

DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte welcomes Guest Conductor David Angus and tenor Jesse Darden for an enchanting program of two retrospective serenades and one visionary song cycle. The Romantic serenades by Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms stem from a Classical genre of music traditionally performed outdoors in the evening. Although Strauss’s noble Serenade in E-flat is small in proportion—a single movement for thirteen winds—it launched his career as a renowned composer and conductor.
