SUMMARY:Scandi Cultural Center presents an exhibit with Ann Bausman
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT: ANN BAUSMAN\n\nAnn attributes her love of textiles to her mother who grew up in Finland\, a country where beautiful design is greatly revered. She always had a project — an embroidered pillow\, a cross-stitch wall-hanging\, a traditional Rya rug or a patch on Ann’s favorite pants. When her sons were little she focused on paper collage as a creative outlet. In a happy twist\, Ann’s youngest came home with an embroidered piece he’d made in art class\, and subsequently started embellishing a shirt and jeans. Ann’s interest in fabrics was reignited and not long after she’d started stitching\, a friend gave her some upholstery samples. There was no looking back. Ann became obsessed with finding and using “found fabric\,” taking inspiration from layering of colors and patterns. Look close at Ann’s pieces and you may see snippets from an old dishcloth\, a loved Boden skirt\, the now-too-tight Old Navy sundress or Marimekko fabric which she inherited from her mother. Several years ago Ann was inspired to stop buying new clothes in response to the waste and environmental impact of the fashion industry. She took to shopping at thrift stores\, mending pants (thanks Mom!) and reading up on boro stitching which has its roots in Japan. Reuse of even the smallest scraps of fabric and visible mending are characteristics of boro and can be found in my fabric collages and other pieces. Ann often employs a simple running stitch which adds texture and color. The process itself is slow and meditative. In particular\, the manuscripts containing Machaut’s compositions are true works of art\, carefully compiled – some possibly under direct supervision of the composer himself – and beautifully illuminated. The first of two sessions on Machaut will focus on secular compositions in one\, two\, and three parts. \n“Machaut and the Ars Nova – II”\nWednesdays 5:30-6:45pm EST: October 19\, 26 & November 2\, 9\nThe music of Guillaume Machaut (ca. 1300-1377) offers a wonderful opportunity to study the style\, forms\, and musical notation used in the ars nova in France. The second of two sessions on Machaut will feature movements from the Messe de Nostre Dame\, which is the first complete polyphonic mass cycle composed in the history of European music\, alongside a selection of his secular compositions. \nThe upcoming online notation sessions in 2022/2023 focus on music of the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries\, including an exploration of ars nova mensural notation\, an introduction to the notation of the Italian trecento\, and a look at the merging of these two distinct practices and musical styles at the turn of the fifteenth century. DESCRIPTION:This year’s Poetry Series will open with readings by Nidia Hernandez\, Karen Klein and Jean Dany Joachim. An open mic will follow with a limit of one poem per person. The series is facilitated by Doug Holder of Ibbetson St. Press. \n  \nNidia Hernandez is the editor of The Invisible Borders of Time: Five Female Latin American Poets.  Hernaìndez is also the winner of the Sundara Ramaswamy prize for The Land of Mild Light: Selected Poems of Rafael Cadenas. \n  \nJean Dany Joachim was the Cambridge Poet Populist from 2009 to 2011 and is currently the Poet in Residence at First Church in Cambridge. He has three published collections of poetry\, Crossroads / Chimenkwaze (2013)\, Avec des Mots (2014)\, and Quartier (2016)\, and has also written short stories and plays. \n  \nAfter retiring from the Brandeis University faculty\, Karen Klein returned to studying modern dance and began writing contemporary lyric poetry. Her first book of poetry is titled This Close (Ibbetson Street Press). \n  \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. There are train and bus connections. Nearest airport is ABE\, Lehigh Valley International Airport. Newark Airport is 1 hour and 15 minutes away. \nWhile we hope it will be possible to have a normal Festival\, we’ll follow Covid developments and will adjust if necessary. Proof of vaccination will be required. Plans are shaping up so stay tuned for more information! \nThe heart of the Festival is the Central Program. It is the largest and most varied program we offer\, with classes available for most early music instruments\, and music ranging from Medieval to Baroque. You can choose the combination of classes that works for you — perfect if\, like some of our students\, you sing or dance and play an instrument or two. Play in consorts of like or mixed instruments\, investigate a new repertory\, take a dance class\, or begin a new instrument. We also offer a unique program in early notation for all levels starting with absolute beginner. Pitch: most classes will be at a=440. Viol-only and most Baroque ensemble classes will be at a=415.
