SUMMARY:The Scandi Cultural Center presents THE FANTASTIC ART OF PAPER CUTTING
DESCRIPTION:THE FANTASTIC ART OF PAPER CUTTING\n\nLearn to create wonderful paper-cut beings with Danish artist\, Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen\, via Zoom. \nJoin celebrated Danish paper cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen who has had several paper cut workshops in Denmark\, Japan\, and the US. The paper-cut universe of Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen is inhabited by beings who have previously been confined inside the paper. At that time the beings were weighed down by their own and ambient limitations. \nIn this online workshop\, the participants can experience the very best of cutting paper – namely the moment when the paper is unfolded and the magic occurs – that is when the happy paper cut being emerges. Participants will also be exploring the paper cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen\, and hear about Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper cutting artist. \nSunday\, May 22nd\, 2022 | 1pm EST | $30; $25 for SCC Members | Register here \nStudents should supply their own materials so they can cut along with Torben: \n\nA sharp pair of scissors.\nPaper that is approximately the same thickness as printer paper.\nApproximately 5 pieces of paper that are approximately 4 x 4 inches.\nApproximately 5 pieces of paper that are approximately 1 x 2 inches.\nColor according to students’ own wishes.\n\nSkill Level: Beginner level and beyond \nMeet your instructor\, Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen \nTorben Jarlstrøm Clausen started as a paper cut artist in 2004. Since then he has exhibited over 110 places in the U.S.\, Japan\, and Denmark and has held numerous workshops in the same countries. He is 57 years old and lives in Odense in Denmark. Odense is where world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born. Andersen was also a very skilled paper cut artist several hundred years ago. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen seeks with his paper cuts to maintain and renew this old paper cut tradition. \nTorben Jarlstrøm Clausen lives in Odense\, Denmark\, which is the town where the world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born. Besides writing fairy tales\, Hans Christian Andersen was also a very skilled paper cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen humbly tries with his paper cuts to keep the paper-cutting tradition alive today\, which Hans Christian Andersen was an exponent of almost 200 years ago. \nSee more about Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen: \nwww.facebook.com/JarlstroemPaperArt\nwww.JarlstroemPaperArt.dk\nTwitter: @JarlstroemPaper\nInstagram: @JarlstroemPaperArt\nE-shop: www.etsy.com/shop/JarlstroemPaperArt

SUMMARY:New Rep presents New Voices Theatre Festival
DESCRIPTION:New Rep’s first New Voices Theatre Festival will feature three twenty-minute plays directed by Jaime Carrillo\, Inés De La Cruz\, and Naomi Ibasitas. Each two-person cast will bring these stories to life in the intimate Black Box Theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. \nPlay summaries: \nAURORA by Ramón Esquivel \nThe play takes place on an Autumn Night on the Aurora Bridge in Seattle in 2010. Kai has come here to end their life\, and Halen tries to stop the attempt. We learn that Halen committed suicide in the same spot two years earlier\, and has reappeared to support Kai in this time of crisis. This play employs magical realism in an ultimately uplifting story about depression\, grief\, metaphysics\, and the transcendent nature of love. \nORGANIC by Jenna Jane \nIn a future where everyone is enhancing their bodies with the latest tech\, 81-year-old Donna Goldman is an anomaly – she’s 100 percent organic. But now\, there’s a problem: She’s dying. And a bionic body part is the only cure. Will cyborg Dr. Flores persuade her to abandon her sense of self to survive? This sci-fi drama explores the relationship between the body and the self. \nBY ANY OTHER NAME by Erin Lerch \nThe play takes place in the age of space travel. In the aftermath of the disaster that destroyed her home\, sole survivor Amaranth must decide who and how she needs to be in order to survive beneath the weight of others’ expectations. \nTickets are $25 for Adults\, and $10 for students and can be purchased at Calendar | New Rep

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents Lesbian Life in Boston: 1910-1920
DESCRIPTION:What was it like to be a lesbian in a world that was not ready to deal with differences? How did lesbians deal with isolation and ostracism? And what was it like to live through the years when men fought to keep women from having the right to vote? Author\, Ellen Levy\, will speak to these experiences in an interactive program that is based on the extensive research she did for her historic novel series. \n  \nEllen Levy’s books\, Romance at Stonegate\, Struggles in a Boston Marriage and Chosen Family reflect her passion as a Lesbian and a Jew in researching and writing about the struggles Lesbian women in the early 1900s faced. From the suffrage movement to immigration of Eastern European Jews and the creation of settlement houses\, her novels bring to light this important and often overlooked part of the history of the women’s movement. \n  \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The login information will be sent just after registration closes. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Ensemble 2
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 12\, 2022\n3:00 PM War Memorial Auditorium\, Newton City Hall \nERROLLYN WALLEN Photography: Movement 1 (2007)\nMOZART Violin Concerto No.5 in A Major\, K. 219\nHAYDN Symphony No. 49 in F minor\, Hob. 1:49 (“La Passione”) \nKevin Rhodes\, conductor\nJulia Cash\, violin \nIn June\, Pro Arte celebrates its newly appointed Concertmaster\, violinist Julia Cash\, for a concert of contemporary and Classical works. \nBelizean-British composer Errollyn Wallen wrote Photography in 2005 as a series of snapshots inspired by musical memories. Its first movement\, based on what she calls “a simple motif\,” opens the program with irrepressible vibrancy. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s enchanting Fifth Violin Concerto offers a number of delightful surprises. In the otherwise spirited opening movement\, the soloist makes an unconventional entrance with a slow\, songlike interlude. Another interruption occurs in the finale\, in which a Turkish-style march is interjected into a fluid minuet. \nIt is unclear whether the nickname of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 49\, “La passione”\, refers to the character of its music\, but it still perfectly describes this somber work. The symphony burns with intensity from beginning to end and brings the concert to an impassioned close.
