DESCRIPTION:Based on years of teaching college art students\, Ellen Schön’s passion for teaching critique as an essential part of the creative process has only grown. She received a BA from Marlboro College (Ceramics and Perceptual Psychology) and MFA in Ceramics from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry. \nSchön has organized and co-curated interdisciplinary group exhibitions in non-profit venues in Boston and internationally. SUMMARY:New Art Center presents Art As Salve
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in the concept of Healing Justice\, Art as Salve showcases responses and interventions to generational trauma and violence with the hope of impactful change to mend our bodies\, hearts and minds. The exhibit\, Art as Salve\, asks the question – how might art function as a holistic intervention for survivors of oppression and violence? What would happen if art was used as a symbol for healing? Visit the New Art Corridor to see these introspective works and share in this healing process with New Art Center\, the artists\, and the community around us. \nThis exhibition is a part of the Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) Curatorial Program. As a community arts education space\, the New Art Center believes that art creates change. With a 44+ year history of building community through art\, we recognize it is crucial to use our platform to fight systemic racism and social injustices. \nThe BIPOC Curatorial Program enables curators who identify as Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Color to develop and share exhibitions that spark dialogue\, share personal vision\, and personal experiences through curation. We hope this opportunity will create much needed dialogue to counter systemic racism. \nhttps://newartcenter.org/class/art-as-salve-a-close-looking-tour/

SUMMARY:Canceled-Commonwealth Chorale presents: Country Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Classical or bluegrass? In our second concert of the season\, no need to choose. Composer Carol Barnett has combined the two styles in her bluegrass Mass\, The World Beloved. In her unusual approach Barnett has written what she calls “cheery sacred music\,” blending the usual solemnity of a Mass with down-home energy and rhythms of bluegrass. Please join us to hear Gwyneth Walker comment on her work and see how successful she is in her wonderful combination of styles. The performance will be accompanied by the renowned bluegrass band\, Monroe Crossing. \nIn addition\, the chorus will perform selections from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs: Long Time Ago\, At the River\, and Simple Gifts. Monroe Crossing will also perform a set of bluegrass music. \nTo purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Stephanie Osser
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 3/4\nDetails: Friday\, 1 Session\nTimes: 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nStephanie Osser\nIllustrator- Boston\, Massachusetts.\nAt a time when the world’s news is filled with hardships\, fearful concerns\, negativity\, and divisiveness\, I have committed my art to the uplifting of the human spirit and as an emanation of optimism. It is my hope that each work of art I create will take its beholders away from the darkness of our times and bring them into a world of light— whether it is through my lithophanes\, the use of bright and colorful glazes against luminescent backgrounds\, or explorations of the properties of light and shadow.

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Racism Not Race with Joseph L. Graves and Alan H. Goodman
DESCRIPTION:Authors Joseph L. Graves Jr. and Alan H. Goodman will discuss their book Racism\, Not Race: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions. The science on race is clear. Common categories like “Black\,” “White\,” and “Asian” do not represent genetic differences among groups. But if race is a pernicious fiction according to natural science\, it is all too significant in the day-to-day lives of racialized people across the globe. Drawing on evidence from both natural and social science\, Graves and Goodman dismantle the myth of gene-based racial difference and demonstrate that the ideology of racism created races. Racism\, Not Race shows readers why antiracist principles are both just and backed by sound science. \nJoseph L. Graves Jr. is a professor in the Department of Biology at North Carolina A&T State University. He is a fellow of the Council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His books include The Emperor’s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium (2001) and The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America (2005). \nAlan H. Goodman is a professor of biological anthropology at Hampshire College and a former vice president for academic affairs. He is a past president of the American Anthropological Association and codirects its public education project on race. He is a coauthor of Race: Are We So Different? (second edition\, 2019)\, among other books. \nPlease register for the zoom link here. This program is presented in partnership with the Ashland Public Library\, the event sponsor.  The zoom link will come from ashlandprograms@minlib.net.
