SUMMARY:Newton Theatre Company Presents "The Guys"
DESCRIPTION:“We all travel in our track… after 9/11\, all over the city\, people were jumping tracks”. In post 9/11 New York City\, Nick\, a fire captain\, and Joan\, a writer\, share their experiences and lean on each other as they write eight eulogies for fallen firefighters. These two strangers navigate their grief through humor\, compassion\, the written word – and the power of human connection. “We have no idea what wonders lie hidden in the people around us.” \nBased on a true story\, The Guys follows two individuals less than two weeks after the September 11 attacks – New Yorkers are still in shock. One of them\, an editor named Joan\, receives an unexpected phone call on behalf of Nick\, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack. He’s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must present at their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together\, recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles\, and fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process\, Nick and Joan discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love for the unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief\, they draw on humor\, tango\, the appreciation of craft in all its forms-and the enduring bonds of common humanity. \nFirst performed in a hit off-off-Broadway production starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray\, The Guys is a timeless drama about the surprising truths people can discover in ordinary lives\, and the connections we make with others and ourselves in times of tragedy. \nDirected by Newton Public Schools Theatre Teacher Olivia Moriarty\, these performances feature NPS Theatre Teachers Paige Perkinson (Joan) and Jeff Knoedler (Nick). Special ticket pricing is available for teachers and first responders.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Founding Newtonians in East Parish Burying Ground
DESCRIPTION:How does a burying ground tell our local story? Ramble through East Parish Burying Ground as we visit the grave sites of some of Newton’s early English settlers and the location of the 1630s meetinghouse. We’ll also reveal the hidden stories of the Indigenous Massachusett people and enslaved and free Black Newtonians who were not buried there\, but whose experience is equally as important in understanding this time period. Please note that the majority of this walk will take place on unpaved\, uneven terrain. \nWalking tours are $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Register at https://events.humanitix.com/eastparish2024walkingtour. For more information and a complete list of this year’s walking tours visit www.newtonma.gov/HNwalks.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Lou Jones
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Lou Jones\nTuesday\, September 17\, 7:00 pm \nThe Allen Center is pleased to host an artist talk with Lou Jones\, the photographer behind the exquisite exhibition hanging in The Allen Center’s ground-floor gallery space. The PanAFRICA Project aims to create a contemporary visual portrait of modern Africa\, using photography and advanced technologies to establish a repository of images for all 54 countries. This collection avoids preconceived Western notions of conflict\, pestilence\, and poverty\, instead documenting Africa’s highlights and inner workings as the most progressive continent of the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Sheffield Chamber Players presents Open Arms\, Open Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Sheffield Chamber Players open Season 11 with two works—written almost 200 years apart and on different continents— that tap the deepest corners of your soul while lifting you out of the everyday and into the sublime. Shelley Washington’s 2019 String Quartet Middleground overlays rhythmic grooves with sweeping melodies passing between the four voices. Schubert’s transcendent cello quintet shares some compositional DNA with the Washington\, particularly an incredible emotional sincerity\, and the ability to lift the listener onto beautiful waves as though being carried through the twists and turns of life. Schubert wrote this work in the late summer and early fall of 1828\, and it reflects the freedom and joy of summer\, alongside autumnal melancholy that perhaps hints at Schubert’s all too short life coming to an end. ~ Sasha Callahan \nTickets Are Available Here
