The name Mario Lanza did not belong in the hallowed halls of great opera singers. He owed his popularity to second-rate Hollywood movies and sang classical arias and pop songs to the masses that adored him. He also inspired the biggest names in opera to turn to the craft with his film The Great Caruso. SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Learning to Look / Looking to Learn – Critique and the Creative Process
DESCRIPTION:Based on years of teaching college art students\, Ellen Schön’s passion for teaching critique as an essential part of the creative process has only grown. Join Schön as she guides us through her philosophy and essential practices of looking\, describing\, and responding to what a piece evokes. Schön characterizes the goal of critique as “learning to look and looking to learn.” \nEllen Schön is Adjunct Faculty in Fine Arts and former Ceramics Studio Supervisor Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge\, MA since 2002. She received a BA from Marlboro College (Ceramics and Perceptual Psychology) and MFA in Ceramics from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry. \nSchön has organized and co-curated interdisciplinary group exhibitions in non-profit venues in Boston and internationally. She has fostered international artist collaboration and exchange through participation in artist symposia and residencies in eight countries. \nSchön was a recipient of The Artist Foundation Fellowship from MA Council on Art and Humanities and past Artist Fellow at the St. Botolph Club in Boston. She is a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery. Schön has exhibited widely in the US. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and the Fuller Craft Museum\, Brockton\, MA. \nThe zoom link will be found here.

DESCRIPTION:Rooted in the concept of Healing Justice\, Art as Salve showcases responses and interventions to generational trauma and violence with the hope of impactful change to mend our bodies\, hearts and minds. The exhibit\, Art as Salve\, asks the question – how might art function as a holistic intervention for survivors of oppression and violence? What would happen if art was used as a symbol for healing? Visit the New Art Corridor to see these introspective works and share in this healing process with New Art Center\, the artists\, and the community around us. \nThis exhibition is a part of the Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) Curatorial Program. As a community arts education space\, the New Art Center believes that art creates change. With a 44+ year history of building community through art\, we recognize it is crucial to use our platform to fight systemic racism and social injustices. \nThe BIPOC Curatorial Program enables curators who identify as Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Color to develop and share exhibitions that spark dialogue\, share personal vision\, and personal experiences through curation. All are welcome\, including those who did not attend Part I. \nAmy Golahny\, Ph.D. Columbia University\, is Richmond Professor Emerita of Lycoming College\, Williamsport PA. She has lectured internationally\, authored and edited books and articles on Rembrandt and other topics\, and served as president of the Historians of Netherlandish Art.

SUMMARY:Canceled-Commonwealth Chorale presents: Country Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Classical or bluegrass? In our second concert of the season\, no need to choose. Composer Carol Barnett has combined the two styles in her bluegrass Mass\, The World Beloved. In her unusual approach Barnett has written what she calls “cheery sacred music\,” blending the usual solemnity of a Mass with down-home energy and rhythms of bluegrass. Please join us to hear Gwyneth Walker comment on her work and see how successful she is in her wonderful combination of styles. Enjoy the start of Spring with art\, decorations\, and dance performances.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin the New Art Center for a festival of color to welcome Spring! Holi will start at 11 AM with artmaking including Madhubani flower pots\, Rangoli sand art\, and salad spinner splatter paintings. After getting creative with color\, join Krithika Rajkumar for a dance demonstration and workshop where you can learn traditional Bharatanatyam dance. The conclusion of the event includes outdoor color play where you become the canvas for artmaking! You have the opportunity to participate in the very fun (and messy) tradition of throwing organic color powder at each other. Please wear white clothes you do not mind getting stained\, protective eyewear or sunglasses\, and bring towels for clean up afterward. There is no readmittance to the New Art Center building after color play. \nArt activities are geared toward ages 4 and up. SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with Marjorie Kaye | Sculptural Painting
DESCRIPTION:Marjorie Kaye has lived in the Boston area for most of her life\, with stops along the way in Syracuse\, NY to earn her BFA in Painting\, as well as New York City in the 80s. \nShe is a painter and sculptor. Her work has been an exploration of opposites: form and color; organic and geometric; precision and chaos. Colorful and bold\, her gouache paintings and sculptures are kinetic and energetic. Her work has been reviewed in many publications including the Boston Globe and ArtScope Magazine and has been shown extensively both locally and nationally\, including galleries such as Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, Atlantic Works Gallery in East Boston\, Harbor Gallery\, UMass Boston\, and the Walter Wickiser Gallery in NYC. She was a 2016 winner of the Lillian Orlowsky/William Freed Foundation Grant from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and was included in a group exhibition in their galleries. Also\, Ms. Kaye was named a finalist in the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Awards in Painting. \nKaye is the founder of Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, MA\, a large artist-run gallery featuring over 39 artists from Boston and beyond. She was the director of that space from 2009 – 2017\, as well as the owner. The gallery has transitioned into a non-profit and Ms. Kaye is remaining as Director. Some past projects also include the web-based Caladan Gallery\, which ran for 10 years and exhibited hundreds of artists from all over the world\, and the Lawrence\, MA Gallery 181\, which enhanced the community with the exhibition of local\, national\, and international artists. \nThe Zoom link is found here.

She became the conscience of our nation as she led the fight for freedom and equality during the ‘60s and ‘70s.
