DESCRIPTION:This class for acrylic and/or oil painters will explore the unique challenges of landscape painting and provide students with the skills to render space two-dimensionally. We will be working outdoors\, or if the weather is bad\, working indoors using photographs and books. Students will learn composition\, light\, and shading\, and the effects of light on color to create a dynamic series of landscapes. Class demonstrations will focus on subject selection\, under-painting\, personal expression\, and creating a sense of space. DESCRIPTION:Join Eamon McCarthy Earls for a wild ride as he dives into the history of the Twisted Sisters\, four storms – Carol\, Edna\, Connie and Diane – that hammered New England and the Northeast all in a period of 12 months during the 1950s. These storms brought devastating winds\, pounding waves\, record tidal surges and floods of nearly Biblical proportions! Today\, despite the massive seawalls and flood control projects built in the wake of the Twisted Sisters\, the question is\, will it happen again? \nEamon McCarthy Earls is an author of multiple books on regional history. He studied geology and history at UMASS-Amherst\, served for three years as a Town Council member in his hometown of Franklin\, Massachusetts\, and is now completing a law degree at George Mason University in Arlington\, Virginia. \nRegistration for this program will end two hours before the start time. SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with Lisa Regopoulos
DESCRIPTION:When Realism meets Impressionism in pastel\, that’s where the excitement begins for Massachusetts artist Lisa Regopoulos. That’s how she likes to paint. It need not be a specific object\, but a strong shape or pleasing color harmony combined with movement and texture that get transformed into an impressionistic pastel. First impressions of a scene\, life in real time\, the beauty of the now are the moments she wants to capture. That is why plein air painting excites her most. Her plein air work is fresh and evokes the feeling of whatever is happening at that moment in time. It’s that emotion in her pastels that engages her viewers\, causing them to linger and begging them to share in that feeling. \nHer enthusiasm for pastel and plein air painting has led her to learn from some of the nation’s best Artists in pastel\, watercolor and oil at the Plein Air Convention and the IAPS Convention in Albuquerque\, NM. She has attended many intensive workshops in order to keep growing as an artist\, and to learn about new techniques and trends. One of her favorite intensive workshops was a week of plein air pastel painting in Tuscany in May 2017. \nWorking in pastel and teaching her students this versatile medium are two of her greatest passions. She has worked in the medium for twenty years and has seen incredible growth after becoming a full-time artist when her daughter entered college four years ago. Her commitment to teaching began nearly a decade ago\, conducting small private classes in her home\, to weekly classes at the Wild Salamander Creative Arts Center\, Hollis\, NH\, to workshops and demonstrations all over the New England Region. She currently maintains a new studio in Fitchburg\, MA. In June of 2019\, Lisa taught a 10 day plein air workshop at La Romita School (www.laromita.org)\, Umbria\, Italy\, and is actively pursuing teaching workshops across the USA \nClick here for more info.

DESCRIPTION:Auditions for the Zamir Chorale of Boston’s 2021-22 season will be held Sunday\, Sept. 12\, 2021\, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. \, at Temple Reyim\, 1860 Washington St.\, Auburndale (Newton). \nAuditions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance by emailing manager@zamir.org. \nCandidates should have excellent vocal quality\, the ability to sight-read music\, and previous choral experience. In addition to the audition\, candidates are required to attend open rehearsals from 7:15 to 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, September 14\, and Tuesday\, October 5\, at Temple Reyim. Rehearsals throughout the year are generally held on Tuesdays at Temple Reyim\, from 7:15 to 10:00 p.m.\, from September through early June.
