SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents VOLCANIC!
DESCRIPTION:Join Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and conductor Gisèle Ben-Dor as she returns to lead Pro Arte in a sweeping program featuring American violinist Lucia Lin—a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a professor at Boston University. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Octet is a playful suite in the tradition of wind band music popular in Austria at the time. A century later\, the Venezuelan-American composer Teresa Carreño wrote a Romantic take on the Classical suite during a stay in the Alps. Her intoxicating Serenade for strings conveys all the charm of the Austrian lakeside village where it was written. In the music of the contemporary composer J.P. Jofre\, one hears the tango of his native Argentina alongside the jazz of New York City\, where he now lives. His violin concerto Mauna Loa\, co-commissioned by Lucia Lin (and performed in its US premiere by Pro Arte in March 2022)\, is a vibrant work capturing the immense power of the world’s largest active volcano.

SUMMARY:Invitation to Imagine at The Allen Center
DESCRIPTION:This visit invites children and their families to travel 150 years back in time to imagine what it would have been like to live and learn at the Allen home and this historic school. \nThis historic house was once the home of Nathaniel Allen\, founder of The West Newton English and Classical School. Nathaniel Allen was a progressive educator who provided equal opportunities for girls and boys in racially mixed classrooms even before the Civil War. His curriculum was innovative\, and students came from all over the world to attend his school. \nGuests will explore the parlor\, a classroom\, and even the bowling alley as we learn about the family\, the students\, the school\, and the unique curriculum. Our visit will finish in the barn\, where you will have the opportunity to try some of the games and activities that children enjoyed at this time. \nWe hope you can join us to learn about the history of this newly renovated Newton treasure! Each visit will run approximately one hour. Free event\, 3rd grade and up\, registration required (see button below). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\nSunday\, December 11 3:00-4:00 PM \nThursday\, December 15  4:00-5:00 PM \nSunday\, January 22  3:00-4:00 PM \nThursday\, January 26  4:00-5:00 PM
