SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: A Choral Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:This season\, in response to the alarming rise in racism\, antisemitism\, and other forms of prejudice\, we are even more committed to using our resources to expose our audiences (and ourselves) to music representing different cultures\, ethnicities\, and ways of thinking. With that in mind\, we are presenting an online series called “A Choral Rainbow\,” featuring video performances and conversations with the conductors of choruses from diverse and under-represented communities. \nOur first program\, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Israel to New England\, will feature David Hodgkins\, conductor of Coro Allegro—Boston’s LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus; Micah Hendler\, conductor of The Jerusalem Youth Chorus—a choral and dialogue program for Palestinian and Israeli youth in Jerusalem; and Diana Sáez\, a leading specialist in the field of Latin American choral music. Watch this promo! \nThis is the first of a three-part program. SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Cicely Carew
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based\, L.A.-raised artist Cicely Carew spent her formative years in Los Angeles\, CA. She recently completed her MFA from Lesley Art + Design in Cambridge\, MA. Directly after graduation\, she had a solo exhibition at Simmons University\, Trustman Gallery\, in 2020. She actively exhibits her work in galleries and was recently featured in the Newport Art Museum’s 2020-21 exhibition “Call & Response. Cicely was the featured interview and artwork for the Boston Art Review ‘s No. 6 issue (2020). She also creates public art installations around the Boston area\, including a major 5\,000 sq ft. public art project in the Prudential Center curated by Now + There (2021) and another commission for Peloton in New York City (2021). Carew was recently awarded the 2021 St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist award for painting. Carew is an educator and will teach workshops for the New Art Center and be the Artist in Residence for the 2021-22 academic year at Shady Hill School. She will be exhibiting new work for a solo exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum in fall 2022. Carew currently resides in Cambridge\, MA\, with her son. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Demo with Kathy Anderson
DESCRIPTION:In 2001 Kathy was invited to join a group of painters under the tutelage of the renowned artist\, Richard Schmid. This opportunity renewed and revitalized her work and began a period of intense focus and rapid growth. Painting for these last 10 years with Schmid\, his wife Nancy Guzik\, and the group which has become known as the Putney Painters has provided invaluable support and inspiration. \nThe vision that she bestows on us with every brush stroke comes from a lifetime of intimate contact with nature. Along with her passion for nature and the interconnectedness of the natural world she is also an avid gardener and spends many pleasurable hours close to the flowers that she paints so magnificently. This close contact with her favorite subject provides her with not just a structural knowledge of flowers but a true love for the flowers\, weeds\, dirt and detritus of a natural\, healthy garden. \nKathy believes in painting from life whenever possible and carries her paints on her frequent travels. While she believes that a well trained artist is able to paint anything skillfully\, she has found that the intensity and emotion in her painting flows from her love of her subjects\, whether still life\, garden\, figure\, or the intimate landscape. \nKathy says\, “I view the world with a painter’s eye\, finding paintings in all of my everyday experiences and travels.” \nClick here to learn more.

SUMMARY:Newton Free Library presents: Decolonizing - Placing Indigenous Peoples in the Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Claudia Fox Tree\, Arawak/Yurumein and Debby Irving\, author of Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race\, for an online conversation as they explore how U.S. narratives have shaped their understanding of themselves\, one another and the complex world we live in. Their organic\, cross-racial conversation will pay heed to current events\, in their own lives and in the larger world. Audience engagement and participation will be facilitated by a moderated Q and A following their talk. \nProfessional educator\, Claudia Fox Tree\, M.Ed. (Arawak/Yurumein) teaches courses and workshops on transforming curriculum and culturally responsive teaching practices. She also leads conversations “un-erasing” Native American First Nations People (FNP). She gives voice to Indigenous experiences (past and present) and asks allies and co-conspirators to come on the journey with her. Her presentations feature discussions on identity\, culture\, contributions\, stereotypes and historical inaccuracies. \nDebby Irving is a racial justice educator\, writer and author of Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race. Debby leads workshops and educates and consults with organizations seeking to create racial equity. \nThis program is hosted by Memorial Hall Library in collaboration with Courageous Conversations and libraries in Chelmsford\, Groton\, Haverhill\, Lawrence\, Methuen\, Newton\, North Andover\, Tewksbury\, Westford\, and Wilmington\, Libraries Working Towards Social Justice. SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: Jazz on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Tap dance and jazz have a long and intertwined history. From the prohibition on musical instruments during the era of slavery\, which prompted the enslaved African-Americans to find ingenious ways to use their bodies as percussion instruments\, to the early 20th century New York City where Irish and African-American styles of dancing met and enriched each other while innovative popular musical styles were created through the fusion of cultures\, to the film era and the groundbreaking work of Fred Astaire – these two art forms developed side-by-side\, even if at some point their paths have grown somewhat apart. \nTap dancer Alex MacDonald – the original tap soloist and choreographer for the wildly popular vintage jazz band\, Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox – and pianist and improviser Alex Pryrodny present a fun and educational program that pays tribute to the historical roots of each discipline while fusing them in new ways\, with creativity and lightning speed communication of both virtuoso performers of full display. DESCRIPTION:Live performances are returning and Commonwealth Chorale has a great year planned! Maestro David Carrier has programmed a superb concert season to celebrate his retirement. Be ready to go for a ride with Paul Revere\, pick up a bluegrass banjo\, and then sit back and enjoy Bach and Haydn. \nOur first concert presents nostalgic Americana through the works of Randall Thompson\, Gwyneth Walker and Stephen Paulus.  In March\, we present a unique and uplifting concert with music by Copland and Barnett. The nationally renowned bluegrass band\, Monroe Crossing\, will join us in performing Barnett’s The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass. For our final concert in May\, we return to our classical roots with a performance of Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Lord Nelson Mass) and Bach’s Cantata 140 (Wachet auf\, ruft uns die Stimme).
