SUMMARY:Historic Newton Presents Newton History Series: A Pressing Matter - 18th Century Media Literacy and Bias
DESCRIPTION:Media and information literacy are essential 21st-century skills in order to be an informed citizen. These are also skills that\, when applied in a historical context\, help us become better historians. In this discussion\, we will analyze perspective\, language\, and bias in 18th-century newspapers\, with a critical lens on how news was consumed in colonial America. \nAbout the speaker: Michele Gabrielson is a local history teacher and historic interpreter of the 18th century. When she is not teaching in the classroom\, Michele can be found leading tours\, lectures\, and demonstrations at historic sites in the greater Boston area. She specializes in interpreting the history of colonial women printers\, the stories of loyalist refugees\, and of 18th century chocolate makers! Most recently\, she has taken on building a first-person impression of the revolutionary playwright and poet Mercy Otis Warren. Michele additionally serves on several historical committees dedicated to helping preserve the history of colonial America\, is a member of the Authenticity Standards Committee for Minuteman National Historic Park\, and is the coordinator for the Battle Road Guides for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. She was recently awarded a 2024 Rising Star Award for Public History by the Massachusetts History Alliance for her programming titled\, “The Revolutionary Classroom\,” and named a finalist for the 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. Look out for lectures in both February and March 2025. \nThursday\, January 16\, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\nNewton Free Library\, Druker Auditorium\nFree\, registration not required

SUMMARY:Cappella Clausura presents All About Love
DESCRIPTION:All About Love \n“Sappho begins with a sweet apple and ends in infinite hunger.” (From “Eros the Bittersweet”\, by Anne Carson)  \nToo often throughout history\, we’ve seen women’s love and desire depicted through a male gaze\, while authentic expressions of love and desire by women in art have been considered taboo. Cappella Clausura challenges this by centering the voices of women and gender non-binary composers in this program on the topic of love in all its forms.  \nFeaturing music by Evelin Seppar\, Modesta Bor\, Rafaella Aleotti\, Laura Nevitt\, and others. \n \nFebruary 15th\, 2025 @ 4PM \nGrace Church \nFebruary 16th\, 2025 @ 4PMEmmanuel Church

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Musical Super Heros
DESCRIPTION:This January\, Conductor Emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads Pro Arte through an adventure of music and storytelling that will thrill your whole family.  In The Story of Babar\, the tale of a little elephant’s journey from orphan to king is accompanied at every turn by Francis Poulenc’s picturesque music. Our young soloist shines in the irrepressible finale of Joseph Haydn’s first cello concerto. Sensemayá\, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas\, is a spellbinding depiction of an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist must subdue a snake. Our program ends with the riotous Toy Symphony\, in which playful instruments like a triangle\, a rattle\, and a cuckoo whistle all try to steal the spotlight.\n\n\n\n\nMusical Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCIS POULENC Story of Babar the Elephant \nFRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN Finale from Cello Concerto No.1 \nSILVESTRE REVUELTAS Sensemayá \nHAYDN Toy Symphony \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:House Concert with Folk Singer-songwriter Grace Morrison
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our welcoming and spacious home! Drinks\, snacks\, and plenty of joy provided as we delight in this opportunity to be up close with a rising new singer songwriter. Minimum $25 donation goes directly to the performer. You must send an email with your name and phone to reserve a seat ahead of time to houseconcertsnewton@gmail.com. \nWe are thrilled to host Grace Morrison for folk music that’s so unique\, it’s hard to describe. “If country\, pop\, and Americana were on a Venn diagram – Grace Morrison would be squarely in the center.” \n“Her voice smacks of Jewel\, and her style\, cadence\, song structure is every inch from the school of Joan Osborne\, Lisa Loeb\, Natalie Merchant. It’s uncanny.” \n“Grace’s unique brand has established her as a confident\, refreshing voice in country-pop. With performances at Nashville’s Bluebird Café and co-writes with multi-Grammy winner Lori McKenna and hit songwriter Barbara Cloyd under her belt\, Grace made a name for herself in 2022 at songwriter festivals from Massachusetts to Montana. With subjects ranging from Titanic to tantric; an evening with Grace will take you from the court of King Henry VIII to debauchery in Denver. With humor and raw honesty\, audiences leave Grace’s shows with her songs stuck in their heads and their toes tired from tapping.” \nCHECK HER OUT — http://www.gracemorrison.com/
