SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents The Art of Critique by Robert Siegelman
DESCRIPTION:Robert Siegelman\, a widely recognized and acclaimed artist and teacher\, will lead a dynamic discussion that expands the boundaries of art critique. What does our artwork say? What questions does our work ask? This is an exceptional opportunity to experience and engage in a unique approach to art critique. \nThe discussion will spring from the artworks of five NAA artists who submit three (3) recent related works. Submitted works may be in progress or finished. They are accepted on a first come basis. All attendees participate in the discussion. NAA artists interested in submitting works should contact Cindy Cole (cynthiahcole@gmail.com). Deadline for submissions: February 1\, 2023. \nSiegelman is a photographer\, figurative expressionist\, and a transformative teacher. His teaching itself is a fine art. He taught at The SMFA/Tufts University in Boston for forty years. He continues to teach and work with artists privately. \nNote: This is a Zoom presentation. SUMMARY:Historic Newton presents Jewish Lawyers Against Jim Crow
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Lawyers Against Jim Crow\n\nDate:02/23/2023 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation:Virtual\nVirtual Meeting\nNewton\, Massachusetts 02459\n\nAdd to my Calendar\nIn the 1960s\, the campaign against Jim Crow laws in the South was mounted not only in the streets but also in the courts\, especially because a few hundred attorneys from outside the region represented civil rights activists. The demographic of this group is striking. Nearly all of these attorneys were white men; nearly all of them were Jews\, including a young Barney Frank. By challenging legally-enforced segregation\, these members of the bar made “the equal protection of the laws” more widely applicable even outside the South. Yet what they accomplished is yet to be adequately told\, or appreciated. This presentation by Brandeis professor emeritus Stephen Whitfield is intended to rectify some of that neglect. Part of the Newton History Series with the Newton Free Library. Register here.

SUMMARY:Commonwealth Chorale Concert presents Celebrating Harmony in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Harmony in Troubled Times\nJohn Rutter (b. 1945): Requiem\nFlorence Price (1887-1953): Praise the Lord and selections from Communion Service in F\nWith organ and professional orchestra\nFor our final concert\, we celebrate harmony with John Rutter’s belovedRequiem and selections from works by Florence Price. We are delighted to bring you Rutter’s modern Requiem which incorporates parts of the Latin Requiem with added psalms and biblical verses in English. An undeservedly overlooked and significant American composer\, Florence Price’s beautifully written Praise the Lord and selections from the Communion Service in F  are settings of familiar texts that reflect both her European influenced training at New England Conservatory and her Southern roots. Price was the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. Commonwealth Chorale is pleased and excited to introduce our audience to music by this talented composer.
