SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Nathalie Miebach
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nNathalie Miebach’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines\, Miebach translates scientific data related to ecology\, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures. Miebach’s method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. Central to this work is the desire to explore the role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of scientific information. By utilizing artistic processes and everyday materials\, Miebach questions and expands the traditional boundaries through which science data has been visually translated (ex: graphs\, diagrams)\, while at the same time provoking expectations of what kind of visual vocabulary is considered to be in the domain of ‘science’ or ‘art’. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Historic Newton presents: Activism and 'Redeeming Uncle Tom'
DESCRIPTION:Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel\, Uncle Tom’s Cabin\, galvanized anti-slavery forces. Yet activism for human rights was growing in the early 19th century. Our screening of “Redeeming Uncle Tom\,” a film about Josiah Henson\, whose life story inspired Stowe\, informs our discussion afterwards. Learn how Henson fits into the beginning of an organized movement for abolition\, which coalesced in the 1830s and led to Stowe using her novel to promote social justice. Our guest speaker\, Holly Jackson\, is the author of American Radicals and a professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. This program is funded in part by a grant from Mass Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Register here to attend this Zoom program.

SUMMARY:Newton Theatre Company presents: A Medal for Willie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual production of William Branch’s A Medal for Willie\, a powerful play which examines the intersection of segregation and racism during a time when both were permitted to flourish. Set in a small town during the Jim Crow era with eerily contemporary parallels\, A Medal for Willie serves as a reminder that bias and supremacy must always be challenged and that change can occur in even the smallest pockets of our society. \nThe play will be followed by an audience Q&A\, with a panel of the cast\, directors\, and members of Families Organizing for Racial Justice (FORJ). \nAfter the show\, please stay for a talkback conversation facilitated by FORJ. We will explore the themes of bias\, prejudice\, and structural racism embedded within the play and confront its modern-day relevance. Theater offers a compelling and interesting vehicle for us to delve into challenging conversations with honesty and bravery. It is our hope that this talkback conversation is engaging\, thought-provoking\, and furthers our understanding of how we can interrupt the corrosive effects of racism. \nReserve your ticket here.  Log on at 7:45 to live music by Danny Rivera! \nThis production is made possible by a generous grant from the Harmony Foundation\, and is being produced in partnership with Overdue: Confronting Race and Racism in Newton. We are grateful to both of these organizations for their support.
