SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: Jazz on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Tap dance and jazz have a long and intertwined history. From the prohibition on musical instruments during the era of slavery\, which prompted the enslaved African-Americans to find ingenious ways to use their bodies as percussion instruments\, to the early 20th century New York City where Irish and African-American styles of dancing met and enriched each other while innovative popular musical styles were created through the fusion of cultures\, to the film era and the groundbreaking work of Fred Astaire – these two art forms developed side-by-side\, even if at some point their paths have grown somewhat apart. \nTap dancer Alex MacDonald – the original tap soloist and choreographer for the wildly popular vintage jazz band\, Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox – and pianist and improviser Alex Pryrodny present a fun and educational program that pays tribute to the historical roots of each discipline while fusing them in new ways\, with creativity and lightning speed communication of both virtuoso performers of full display. DESCRIPTION:In 2001 Kathy was invited to join a group of painters under the tutelage of the renowned artist\, Richard Schmid. This opportunity renewed and revitalized her work and began a period of intense focus and rapid growth. Painting for these last 10 years with Schmid\, his wife Nancy Guzik\, and the group which has become known as the Putney Painters has provided invaluable support and inspiration. \nThe vision that she bestows on us with every brush stroke comes from a lifetime of intimate contact with nature. Along with her passion for nature and the interconnectedness of the natural world she is also an avid gardener and spends many pleasurable hours close to the flowers that she paints so magnificently. This close contact with her favorite subject provides her with not just a structural knowledge of flowers but a true love for the flowers\, weeds\, dirt and detritus of a natural\, healthy garden. \nKathy believes in painting from life whenever possible and carries her paints on her frequent travels. While she believes that a well trained artist is able to paint anything skillfully\, she has found that the intensity and emotion in her painting flows from her love of her subjects\, whether still life\, garden\, figure\, or the intimate landscape. \nKathy says\, “I view the world with a painter’s eye\, finding paintings in all of my everyday experiences and travels.” \nClick here to learn more.

Please register here. \nJoin author and longtime Chronicle reporter Ted Reinstein for a presentation on his latest book\, Before Brooklyn: The Unsung Heroes Who Helped Break Baseball’s Color Barrier. The book tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball\, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. Readers will learn that in 1884 Moses Fleetwood Walker was actually the first black player in professional baseball and\, for a time\, integrated teams were not that unusual. Then\, as segregation In the U.S. hardened and exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm\, the battle for integration began anew. \nTed Reinstein has been a reporter for Chronicle\, WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning nightly news magazine since 1997.
