SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Cubism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At about the same time as the invention of Cubism\, Einstein was publishing his early papers on relativity; masks\, artifacts and ritual objects from Africa were first exhibited in Paris\, and the Eiffel Tower was new. Cubism was invented\, in part\, as a way of examining and painting stationary objects to incorporate what the object looks like as you move around it\, i.e. from different perspectives. Cubism sought to incorporate time as the fourth dimension in the arts. \nWe’ll start with drawing still-lifes with charcoal\, pencil\, pen and ink\, working from life rather than from Cubist drawings and paintings. Then we’ll begin the painting process using the earth tones of those early cubist paintings for the same reasons. First working out the structure with shapes and values\, then bringing colors to it as we progress\, much as the Cubists developed their plans. In the last session\, we’ll work from a model\, and we highlight painting in planes\, breaking down curves into prism-like flat sides. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Nathalie Miebach
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nNathalie Miebach’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines\, Miebach translates scientific data related to ecology\, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures. Miebach’s method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. Central to this work is the desire to explore the role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of scientific information. By utilizing artistic processes and everyday materials\, Miebach questions and expands the traditional boundaries through which science data has been visually translated (ex: graphs\, diagrams)\, while at the same time provoking expectations of what kind of visual vocabulary is considered to be in the domain of ‘science’ or ‘art’. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Isabel Beavers
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for our winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. \nIsabel Beavers will lead an interactive artist presentation\, as she presents recent works that explore climate change as a moment of origin\, and invites participants to co-create an artistic experiment over virtual space. Please bring a sketchbook or paper\, and a writing or drawing utensil to the presentation. \nBeavers practice includes many forms: multimedia installation\, new media and virtual forms of creation and presentation\, curatorial projects\, as well as social practice experiments in the form of mini-hackathons and worldwide collaborations. In each case her work attempts to combat systems of oppression as they relate to ecology\, bodies and environments\, instead imagining new climate futures. Through site-responsive research and artistic projects she interrogates cultural responses to climate change\, speculates about climate futures\, and questions the ethics of emergent technologies. Recent projects have explored the unraveling of the Arctic Ocean ecosystem\, embedded power structures in Icelandic origin stories and Norse Mythology\, mega-fires in California as a case study for the operation of compassion fatigue\, and curatorial projects addressing extraction\, artificial intelligence\, and artificial ecologies. \nClick here for more information.
