SUMMARY:NAA presents Santiago Hernandez\, The Surround Sound of Art
DESCRIPTION:PD: Santiago Hernandez\, The Surround Sound of Art\nNovember 16 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZOOM LINK\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Influence of Music on Visual Arts (& vice versa)\nMusic has influenced entire art movements. Music has changed individual artists. How does music influence you and your art? It is an honor to have Santiago Hernandez\, a visual artist and drummer\, & university educator\, for our speaker. Santiago has long been interested in musical structure as inspiration for his work. He is a huge fan of jazz music and in particular the music of artists such as Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. The playfulness\, angularity\, and unpredictability of their compositions and solos are of particular interest and inform Santiago’s approach to his compositions. Santiago will also touch upon architecture and its connections to music and how he interprets the architectural images that he works from in his more recent paintings. His presentation invites you to consider the influence of music on your art process and/or final work. Two NAA visual artist-musician members will share their stories of their visual art – music connection. Others who are a visual artist-musician (including listening) and want to share their story should contact Cindy Cole (cynthiahcole@gmail.com). Bio: Santiago Hernandez studied at the Arts Students League prior to receiving his BFA in Studio Art\, School of Visual Arts\, NY\, and his MFA in Painting\, University of South Florida\, Tampa\, FL. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. He has exhibited widely and his art is in the collections of RISD Museum of Art\, Providence\, RI; Orlando Museum of Art\, and Provincetown Art Association and Museum\, Provincetown\, MA\, as well as numerous corporate and private collections. He has more than 20 years’ experience teaching and developing new courses at the college level at Lesley University (Sr. Lecturer) and at Mass College of Art (Adjunct Professor). He teaches Advanced Projects in Painting\, Abstract Painting\, and Intro to Sculpture among other courses. As a professional drummer and percussionist\, he specializes in playing jazz\, Afro-Cuban\, Latin Jazz\, Latin Funk\, and Blues. He performs regularly in the Boston area with various ensembles. He also teaches percussion privately\, in music studios\, and conducts workshops.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82244484014?pwd=NE9WekNEYW9Ody9GNmNFSmR0bTFVQT09

SUMMARY:NAA presents Garland of Hours\, Gage Opdenbrouw\, oil
DESCRIPTION:“For many years now\, I have found old family photos\, from my family\, as well as found photos\, to be poignant and moving source material for a body of paintings I call ‘Garland of Hours’” says Gage Opdenbrouw. “The paintings are often torn apart and rebuilt\, destroyed\, and reconstructed again and again\, in the course\, of their development—a process analogous to both the passing of time and our experience of memory.” \nUltimately the paintings are intended as meditations on themes like time\, remembrance\, forgetting\, love\, loss\, impermanence\, attachment\, and letting go—a reflection on mortality and the passing of days\, distilled into paint. \nThis demo will provide an overview of the work and an opportunity to look over the artist’s shoulder as he works on a canvas or two from this body of work. \nAbout Gage Opdenbrouw\nBorn and raised in Northern California\, Gage Opdenbrouw is an award-winning painter\, who\, until recent times\, traveled frequently to paint and teach.  He now teaches online courses at Washington Studio School\, in Washington DC\, and Winslow Art Center\, near Seattle. \nHe has an upcoming show at Sue Greenwood Gallery in Laguna Beach\, with Ryan Reynolds and Sandy Ostrau\, and another with San Francisco painter and longtime friend Heidi McDowell\, at SHOH Gallery in Berkeley in this fall.  Other recent exhibitions include Black Spring\, at Horse and Plow Taproom in Sonoma County\, California\,  a solo show at B Sakata Garo Gallery in Sacramento\,  Midsummer Sun in an Empty Room at SHOH Gallery in Berkeley\, and Silent Music at Washington Studio School. \nHis work was included in John Seed’s recent book Disrupted Realism. Opdenbrouw was the recipient of the Avigdor Arikha Fellowship for a residency in Civita Castellana Italy with the Jerusalem Studio School. \nZoom Details: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89812069236?pwd=QjBnclFRbWw1KzVwQ2dMWEVxbTVtZz09\nNewton AA is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Garland of Hours\, Gage Opdenbrouw\, oil\nTime: Oct 13\, 2022 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89812069236?pwd=QjBnclFRbWw1KzVwQ2dMWEVxbTVtZz09 \nMeeting ID: 898 1206 9236\nPasscode: 658853\nOne tap mobile\n+16469313860\,\,89812069236#\,\,\,\,*658853# US\n+13017158592\,\,89812069236#\,\,\,\,*658853# US (Washington DC) \nMeeting ID: 898 1206 9236\nPasscode: 658853\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/knJuA2baF
