DESCRIPTION:SIGNS OF LIFE\n\n\n\n\nApril 12\, 2026 \n\n\n3:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\nSecond Church in Newton \n\n\n60 Highland St\, West Newton\, MA 02465\, USA \n\nDIRECTIONS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusical Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nANTONIN DVOŘÁK Notturno for Strings\, Op. 40 \nDMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH Chamber Symphony\, Op.110a. \nADOLFUS HAILSTORK Sonata da Chiesa \nEDWARD ELGAR Introduction and Allegro\, Op. 47 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\nConductor Paul Polivnik returns to Pro Arte in April for a powerful program of music for string orchestra. Antonín Dvořák transformed an early Andante religioso for string quartet into the luminous Nocturne. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony was also originally scored for string quartet\, but its later orchestration conveys his personal anguish with even greater intensity. Inspired by Latin liturgical texts\, Adolphus Hailstork’s Sonata da Chiesa is a contemporary American take on the 17th-century church sonata. Edward Elgar fashioned his rich Introduction and Allegro after another Baroque form\, the concerto grosso\, which assigns a solo role to a group of players—in this case\, a string quartet.

DESCRIPTION:In April\, Alyssa Wang\, Assistant Conductor of the Boston Ballet\, leads Pro Arte in a dramatic journey from darkness to light. The concert opens with Joseph Haydn’s strikingly emotional “La Passione” Symphony\, casting moods both stark and stormy. Jennifer Higdon’s intense Viola Concerto is a kaleidoscopic exploration of all the voices in which that instrument can sing. It will feature Pro Arte’s very own principal violist\, Anne Black. For the ballet Pulcinella\, based on commedia dell’arte\, Igor Stravinsky created sunny interpretations of 18th-century Italian music that brim with the composer’s signature wit and charm.\nMusical Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANZ JOSEF HAYDN Symphony No. 49 in F minor\, “La Passione” \nJENNIFER HIGDON Concerto for Viola \nIGOR STRAVINSKY Pulcinella Suite \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Musical Super Heros
DESCRIPTION:This January\, Conductor Emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads Pro Arte through an adventure of music and storytelling that will thrill your whole family.  In The Story of Babar\, the tale of a little elephant’s journey from orphan to king is accompanied at every turn by Francis Poulenc’s picturesque music. Our young soloist shines in the irrepressible finale of Joseph Haydn’s first cello concerto. Sensemayá\, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas\, is a spellbinding depiction of an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist must subdue a snake. Our program ends with the riotous Toy Symphony\, in which playful instruments like a triangle\, a rattle\, and a cuckoo whistle all try to steal the spotlight.\n\n\n\n\nMusical Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCIS POULENC Story of Babar the Elephant \nFRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN Finale from Cello Concerto No.1 \nSILVESTRE REVUELTAS Sensemayá \nHAYDN Toy Symphony \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Treasures of Youth and Age
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte’s 47th season opens with Louisville-based conductor Gabriel Lefkowitz leading an expressive program for the strings\, principal clarinetist Ian Greitzer\, and principal bassoonist Ronald Haroutunian. In her Canyons\, from 2018\, Tanner Porter paints nature at its most jagged\, imposing\, and majestic. A work like no other\, Richard Strauss’s vibrant Duett-Concertino features writing so organic\, its solo clarinet and bassoon seem to become living\, breathing characters. Although Josef Suk’s warm Serenade was a departure from his melancholy style\, it won him early critical acclaim from Johannes Brahms and positioned him as the successor to his teacher Antonín Dvořák\, and it brings this first concert to an elegant close.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents Strings of Light
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte welcomes conductor Adrian Slywotsky for a fascinating concert with Pro Arte’s strings.  Rather than featuring a soloist\, Vivaldi’s boisterous Concerto for Strings in D Major gives the whole orchestra a chance to show off.  In her 2013 Teen Murti (“three representations” in Hindi)\, Reena Esmail combines traditional Hindustani raag with Western composition technique to present\, in her words\, “three large musical ‘figures’ that are adjoined by short interludes—similar to the idea behind Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.”  Pēteris Vasks’s named his second cello concerto Klātbūtne\, Latvian for “presence” and an allusion to the work’s spiritual meditation on the human condition.  Vasks has said the work “suggests the soul ascending into the cosmos\,” which is especially true of its elegiac final movement.  In Ludwig van Beethoven’s first string quartet\, arranged for Pro Arte by its cellist Leo Egughi\, we hear the composer marking the genre bequeathed to him by Haydn and Mozart with his own distinct and consequential voice. \nMusical Program\nAntonio Vivaldi String Symphony No. 2 in D Major\, \nPeteris Vasks Adagio from Cello Concerto No. 2 “Presence” \nReena Esmail Teen Murti \nLudwig van Beethoven String Quartet No. 1\, op 18\, arr. SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents The Unbroken Circle
DESCRIPTION:THE UNBROKEN CIRCLE\nApril 7\, 2024 \n3:00PM \nSecond Church in Newton \n60 Highland Street\, West Newton\, MA\, USA \nMusical Program\nJeff Beal Overture to Pollock\nRichard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major\, op. 11\nBeal The Great Circle\nOttorino Respighi Gli Uccelli (The Birds) \nTICKETS\nIn April\, Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal leads Pro Arte in a wide-ranging concert featuring his own works and Boston Symphony Orchestra hornist Michael Winter. Known for writing soundtracks to numerous films and television series\, including House of Cards\, Beal opens the concert with his sparkling Pollock Overture\, from the 2000 film directed by and starring Ed Harris. The concerto and its soloist share a paternal connection: Richard Strauss composed his majestic first horn concerto for his father Franz\, and Winter’s first horn teacher was his father’s father James. Beal’s suite The Great Circle\, a response to California’s tragic wildfires and mudslides in 2017–18\, depicts nature’s elements—earth\, air\, fire\, water—and their cyclic power to destroy and renew. Ottorino Respighi composed several suites based on music from earlier centuries. His enchanting Gli uccelli (The Birds) presents orchestral arrangements of Baroque harpsichord pieces inspired by birds.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Classical Lines
DESCRIPTION:Classical Lines\nSunday\, October 29\, 2023 3pm\nMischa Santora\, conductor & Tommy Mesa\, cello \nPro Arte opens its season in dramatic fashion with conductor Mischa Santora\, Music Director of Boston Ballet\, and Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa. In Jessie Montgomery’s Divided\, which Mesa premiered in 2022\, a solo cello gives expressive voice to the unsettled individual living in a conflicted society. Camille Saint-Saëns\, by casting his dynamic first cello concerto as a single movement\, leads the listener on a seamless journey by turns stormy and refined. The concert concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor\, a work well loved for its intense emotional energy.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents Dancing Through the Centuries
DESCRIPTION:Dancing through the Centuries\nSunday\, May 21\, 2023 3pm\nEarl Lee\, conductor \nPro Arte and Earl Lee\, Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, have crafted a fascinating program based on music and movement stretching back six hundred years. Béla Bartók wrote that he would raise the folk music in and around his native Hungary “to the level of art song.” His popular Romanian Folk Dances are evocative arrangements of traditional Transylvanian fiddle tunes. The soulful songs of Southern chain gangs inspired Kenji Bunch’s powerful Supermaximum. Battalia\, by Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber\, is a bracing depiction of a battle that requires unconventional techniques from its string players. As the first Black woman to be widely recognized as a symphonic composer\, Florence Price was a pioneer in American music. Her Andante moderato is a luminous arrangement of the slow movement from one of her string quartets. In music\, La Follia—Italian for “folly”—refers to a frenzied peasant dance from fifteenth-century Portugal. The dance’s catchy chord progression later spread throughout Europe\, forming the basis for countless compositions\, including a set of variations for solo violin by Arcangelo Corelli\, which was later arranged by his pupil Francesco Geminiani for string orchestra. In her La Follia Variations\, contemporary composer Michi Wiancko takes this a step further\, reflecting Geminiani’s Baroque concerto grosso in a dreamy twenty-first-century mirror. \nPROGRAM\nBéla Bartók Romanian Dances\nKenji Bunch Supermaximum\nHeinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber Battalia\nFlorence Price Andante moderato\nArcangelo Corelli/Francesco Geminiani\, Arr. SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents VOLCANIC!
DESCRIPTION:Join Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and conductor Gisèle Ben-Dor as she returns to lead Pro Arte in a sweeping program featuring American violinist Lucia Lin—a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a professor at Boston University. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Octet is a playful suite in the tradition of wind band music popular in Austria at the time. A century later\, the Venezuelan-American composer Teresa Carreño wrote a Romantic take on the Classical suite during a stay in the Alps. Her intoxicating Serenade for strings conveys all the charm of the Austrian lakeside village where it was written. In the music of the contemporary composer J.P. Jofre\, one hears the tango of his native Argentina alongside the jazz of New York City\, where he now lives. His violin concerto Mauna Loa\, co-commissioned by Lucia Lin (and performed in its US premiere by Pro Arte in March 2022)\, is a vibrant work capturing the immense power of the world’s largest active volcano.
