SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Classical Lines
DESCRIPTION:Classical Lines\nSunday\, October 29\, 2023 3pm\nMischa Santora\, conductor & Tommy Mesa\, cello \nPro Arte opens its season in dramatic fashion with conductor Mischa Santora\, Music Director of Boston Ballet\, and Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa. In Jessie Montgomery’s Divided\, which Mesa premiered in 2022\, a solo cello gives expressive voice to the unsettled individual living in a conflicted society. Camille Saint-Saëns\, by casting his dynamic first cello concerto as a single movement\, leads the listener on a seamless journey by turns stormy and refined. The concert concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor\, a work well loved for its intense emotional energy.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents Dancing Through the Centuries
DESCRIPTION:Dancing through the Centuries\nSunday\, May 21\, 2023 3pm\nEarl Lee\, conductor \nPro Arte and Earl Lee\, Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, have crafted a fascinating program based on music and movement stretching back six hundred years. Béla Bartók wrote that he would raise the folk music in and around his native Hungary “to the level of art song.” His popular Romanian Folk Dances are evocative arrangements of traditional Transylvanian fiddle tunes. The soulful songs of Southern chain gangs inspired Kenji Bunch’s powerful Supermaximum. Battalia\, by Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber\, is a bracing depiction of a battle that requires unconventional techniques from its string players. As the first Black woman to be widely recognized as a symphonic composer\, Florence Price was a pioneer in American music. Her Andante moderato is a luminous arrangement of the slow movement from one of her string quartets. In music\, La Follia—Italian for “folly”—refers to a frenzied peasant dance from fifteenth-century Portugal. The dance’s catchy chord progression later spread throughout Europe\, forming the basis for countless compositions\, including a set of variations for solo violin by Arcangelo Corelli\, which was later arranged by his pupil Francesco Geminiani for string orchestra. In her La Follia Variations\, contemporary composer Michi Wiancko takes this a step further\, reflecting Geminiani’s Baroque concerto grosso in a dreamy twenty-first-century mirror. \nPROGRAM\nBéla Bartók Romanian Dances\nKenji Bunch Supermaximum\nHeinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber Battalia\nFlorence Price Andante moderato\nArcangelo Corelli/Francesco Geminiani\, Arr. SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents Concertos for One and All
DESCRIPTION:Concertos for One and All\nComing from Boston Festival Orchestra\, Alyssa Wang makes her Pro Arte debut in a program featuring everyone on the stage. Violinist Steven Copes returns for a concert where all voices are equal and all parts share in the spotlight.\n\nPro Arte welcomes conductor Alyssa Wang and violinist Steven Copes\, Concertmaster of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra\, for a concert of riveting works\, both warmly familiar and boldly inventive.  In Frog’s Eye\, the contemporary composer Evan Ziporyn meticulously layers musical lines to open a vista bustling with life.  The Concerto for string orchestra by the twentieth-century Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz is a carefully crafted work of breathtaking force.  Johannes Brahms composed his majestic Violin Concerto for the violinist Joseph Joachim\, a close friend and collaborator.  Throughout the stately opening movement\, the lyrical Adagio\, and the fiery finale\, Brahms’s music is characteristically expressive\, heartfelt\, and dramatic.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents VOLCANIC!
DESCRIPTION:Join Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and conductor Gisèle Ben-Dor as she returns to lead Pro Arte in a sweeping program featuring American violinist Lucia Lin—a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a professor at Boston University. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Octet is a playful suite in the tradition of wind band music popular in Austria at the time. A century later\, the Venezuelan-American composer Teresa Carreño wrote a Romantic take on the Classical suite during a stay in the Alps. Her intoxicating Serenade for strings conveys all the charm of the Austrian lakeside village where it was written. In the music of the contemporary composer J.P. Jofre\, one hears the tango of his native Argentina alongside the jazz of New York City\, where he now lives. His violin concerto Mauna Loa\, co-commissioned by Lucia Lin (and performed in its US premiere by Pro Arte in March 2022)\, is a vibrant work capturing the immense power of the world’s largest active volcano.

SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents a Benefit for Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte musicians come together to give a concert in benefit of those suffering in Ukraine. Multiple different groups of performers donate their services to perform a moving evening of music. This event is presented for a suggested donation of $50. All proceeds will be donated by Pro Arte to the Relief Fund for Ukrainian Musicians. SUMMARY:Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra presents Ensemble 2
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 12\, 2022\n3:00 PM War Memorial Auditorium\, Newton City Hall \nERROLLYN WALLEN Photography: Movement 1 (2007)\nMOZART Violin Concerto No.5 in A Major\, K. 219\nHAYDN Symphony No. 49 in F minor\, Hob. 1:49 (“La Passione”) \nKevin Rhodes\, conductor\nJulia Cash\, violin \nIn June\, Pro Arte celebrates its newly appointed Concertmaster\, violinist Julia Cash\, for a concert of contemporary and Classical works. \nBelizean-British composer Errollyn Wallen wrote Photography in 2005 as a series of snapshots inspired by musical memories. Its first movement\, based on what she calls “a simple motif\,” opens the program with irrepressible vibrancy. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s enchanting Fifth Violin Concerto offers a number of delightful surprises. In the otherwise spirited opening movement\, the soloist makes an unconventional entrance with a slow\, songlike interlude. Another interruption occurs in the finale\, in which a Turkish-style march is interjected into a fluid minuet. \nIt is unclear whether the nickname of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 49\, “La passione”\, refers to the character of its music\, but it still perfectly describes this somber work. The symphony burns with intensity from beginning to end and brings the concert to an impassioned close.

SUMMARY:Festival of the Arts: Pro Arte Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, enjoy a concert from Pro Arte’s Quartet. \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The quartet will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Lisa Goddard & Colin Davis\, violins\, Anne Black\, viola\, and Steve Laven\, cello.

We are so excited about this concert! We will travel through a couple of standards\, the gorgeous Summer Music by Samuel Barber\, the perfectly danceable Partita by Irving Fine\, and also visit a couple of pieces that may be less familiar. Umoja\, meaning unity\, written by one of our top young American composers\, Valerie Coleman\, and is more timely than ever. We go back in time a bit with an arrangement of Summerland by the formidable and under performed William Grant Still\, originally written for solo piano in 1936. And we couldn’t resist throwing in a nod to Paris with some Gershwin just for fun\, because who doesn’t need some fun these days? We hope you’ll enjoy the journey as much as we will.\n\n\nBARBER Summer Music\, Op. 31\nFINE Partita\nValerie COLEMAN Umoja\nSTILL Summerland\nGERSHWIN An American in Paris\n\n\nMUSICIANS\nAnn Bobo\, flute\nNancy Dimock\, oboe\nIan Greitzer\, clarinet\nRon Haroutunian\, bassoon\nRobert Marlatt\, horn
