DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 12\, 2022\n3:00 PM War Memorial Auditorium\, Newton City Hall \nERROLLYN WALLEN Photography: Movement 1 (2007)\nMOZART Violin Concerto No.5 in A Major\, K. 219\nHAYDN Symphony No. 49 in F minor\, Hob. 1:49 (“La Passione”) \nKevin Rhodes\, conductor\nJulia Cash\, violin \nIn June\, Pro Arte celebrates its newly appointed Concertmaster\, violinist Julia Cash\, for a concert of contemporary and Classical works. \nBelizean-British composer Errollyn Wallen wrote Photography in 2005 as a series of snapshots inspired by musical memories. Its first movement\, based on what she calls “a simple motif\,” opens the program with irrepressible vibrancy. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s enchanting Fifth Violin Concerto offers a number of delightful surprises. In the otherwise spirited opening movement\, the soloist makes an unconventional entrance with a slow\, songlike interlude. Another interruption occurs in the finale\, in which a Turkish-style march is interjected into a fluid minuet. \nIt is unclear whether the nickname of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 49\, “La passione”\, refers to the character of its music\, but it still perfectly describes this somber work. The symphony burns with intensity from beginning to end and brings the concert to an impassioned close.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the 6th Annual Newton Festival of the Arts\, enjoy a concert from Pro Arte’s Quartet. \nJuneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The quartet will share three works by African American composers\, each of which has moments of dance and reflection. Wynton Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls is a set of scenes inspired by his early life in New Orleans. We will play three movements from this work – Creole Contradanzas\, Blue Lights on the Bayou\, and the Rampart Street Row House Rag. Florence Price’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor weaves together her beautiful lyric writing and African American vernacular with daring chromaticism and vibrant movement. The third movement (of four) is a Juba\, a dance developed by Africans brought to America against their will. Dorothy Rudd Moore’s Modes is a beautiful and compact three-movement work\, which ends with an energetic\, movement-inspiring finale. Lisa Goddard & Colin Davis\, violins\, Anne Black\, viola\, and Steve Laven\, cello.

We will travel through a couple of standards\, the gorgeous Summer Music by Samuel Barber\, the perfectly danceable Partita by Irving Fine\, and also visit a couple of pieces that may be less familiar. Umoja\, meaning unity\, written by one of our top young American composers\, Valerie Coleman\, and is more timely than ever. Click here to purchase tickets. \n\nSalon 2:\n \nAfter playing an enjoyable summer salon together\, Lisa Goddard\, Colin Davis\, Anne Black\, and Steven Laven return with a new program. Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 95\, known as the “Serioso” quartet\, is a compact piece on the cusp of Beethoven’s late work\, which pushes the boundaries of form and harmony further than ever before. William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartette is a musical portrait of three of the composer’s friends. Known as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers\,” Still’s accomplishments include over 200 compositions\, being the first African American to conduct a major orchestra (the L.A. Philharmonic)\, and collaborating with prominent literary and cultural figures in the Harlem Renaissance movement. The concert also includes James Lee III’s Abraham’s Sons (in Memoriam Trayvon Martin). Intense and dramatic\, this piece is dedicated to the family of Trayvon Martin. Mr. Lee musically depicts the scope of suffering and mourning inferred by the title of this elegiac solo piece. Click here to purchase tickets. \n\nSalon 1:\nLyrical\, tender\, charming\, warm\, majestic… These are a just a few words that apply equally to Florence Price’s String Quartet in G Major and Beethoven’s Opus 127 Quartet in E Flat Major. Though separated by a century\, each groundbreaking genius overcame adversity to create these two works which express profound humanity and beauty. Beethoven struggled to compose his Op. 127 through illness and complete deafness; Price (perhaps the most notable African American women composers of the early 20th Century) composed her gorgeous G Major Quartet despite enduring systemic racial disadvantages. SUMMARY:Pro Arte presents Serenades and Illuminations CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Pro Arte welcomes Guest Conductor David Angus and tenor Jesse Darden for an enchanting program of two retrospective serenades and one visionary song cycle. The Romantic serenades by Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms stem from a Classical genre of music traditionally performed outdoors in the evening. Although Strauss’s noble Serenade in E-flat is small in proportion—a single movement for thirteen winds—it launched his career as a renowned composer and conductor. By contrast\, Brahms’s robust Serenade in D rivals his symphonies in terms of length. In Les Illuminations\, Benjamin Britten sets the fantastical poetry of French Romantic poet Arthur Rimbaud to equally dazzling music for voice and string orchestra.
