Painting\, drawing\, and sculpture must find ways to push into a space in which both spectacle and society embrace a new digital currency. Join Marlon Forrester for a conversation based on his reflections on stepping through the looking glass of traditional artmaking into a new reality of NFTs and the Metaverse\, reflections on his process and sale of his 1st NFT. \nAbout the artist: \nMarlon Forrester\, born 1976 in Guyana\, South America\, is an artist and educator raised in Boston\, MA. He is a recipient of the 2021 James and Audrey Foster Prize and his work is in the collection of the ICA/Boston. Forrester is a graduate of School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, B.A 2008 and Yale School of Art\, M.F.A. 2010. He is a resident artist at African American Masters Artist Residency Program (AAMARP) adjunct to the Department of African-American Studies in association with Northeastern University. He worked previously as a painting lecturer at SMFA (2017-2019) and has shown both internationally and nationally. His current body of work explores how through media\, Pop Culture\, and advertisement the black male body is commodified through the sport of basketball. Utilizing his concept of “disequilibrium” he works to deconstruct the rites and rituals found within the game and life through his drawings\, paintings\, performance and large-scale installation.

DESCRIPTION:Join the New Art Center for a festival of color to welcome Spring! Enjoy the start of Spring with art\, decorations\, and dance performances.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin the New Art Center for a festival of color to welcome Spring! Holi will start at 11 AM with artmaking including Madhubani flower pots\, Rangoli sand art\, and salad spinner splatter paintings. After getting creative with color\, join Krithika Rajkumar for a dance demonstration and workshop where you can learn traditional Bharatanatyam dance. The conclusion of the event includes outdoor color play where you become the canvas for artmaking! You have the opportunity to participate in the very fun (and messy) tradition of throwing organic color powder at each other. Please wear white clothes you do not mind getting stained\, protective eyewear or sunglasses\, and bring towels for clean up afterward. There is no readmittance to the New Art Center building after color play. \nArt activities are geared toward ages 4 and up. DESCRIPTION:Anthony Romero is a Boston-based artist\, writer\, and organizer committed to documenting and supporting artists and communities of color. His collaborative practice engages intercultural contact and historical narratives in order to generate reparative counter-images and social transformation. Recent projects and performances have been featured at The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha)\, the Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio)\, The Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston) and the Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Biennial (Calgary\, Canada). \n\nÇaca Yvaire is an Afro-Indigenous territorial scholar-practitioner and student of planetary science\, political geoecology\, and the arts. He brings a unique lens to conservation work. He is primarily invested in stimulating and uplifting an infrastructure that supports a rich and imaginative solidarity between lifeways\, and honoring the varied traditions of relating sustainably to the world around us through non-industrial agroecology\, agriculture\, silviculture\, aquaculture\, etc. that have been historically side-lined by imperialist design. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Artist Talk with Cicely Carew
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based\, L.A.-raised artist Cicely Carew spent her formative years in Los Angeles\, CA. She recently completed her MFA from Lesley Art + Design in Cambridge\, MA. Directly after graduation\, she had a solo exhibition at Simmons University\, Trustman Gallery\, in 2020. She actively exhibits her work in galleries and was recently featured in the Newport Art Museum’s 2020-21 exhibition “Call & Response. Cicely was the featured interview and artwork for the Boston Art Review ‘s No. 6 issue (2020). She also creates public art installations around the Boston area\, including a major 5\,000 sq ft. public art project in the Prudential Center curated by Now + There (2021) and another commission for Peloton in New York City (2021). Carew was recently awarded the 2021 St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist award for painting. Carew is an educator and will teach workshops for the New Art Center and be the Artist in Residence for the 2021-22 academic year at Shady Hill School. She will be exhibiting new work for a solo exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum in fall 2022. Carew currently resides in Cambridge\, MA\, with her son. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:Anthony Romero is a Boston-based artist\, writer\, and organizer committed to documenting and supporting artists and communities of color. His collaborative practice engages intercultural contact and historical narratives in order to generate reparative counter-images and social transformation. Recent projects and performances have been featured at The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Omaha)\, the Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio)\, The Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston) and the Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Biennial (Calgary\, Canada). \nÇaca Yvaire is an Afro-Indigenous territorial scholar-practitioner and student of planetary science\, political geoecology\, and the arts. He brings a unique lens to conservation work. He is primarily invested in stimulating and uplifting an infrastructure that supports a rich and imaginative solidarity between lifeways\, and honoring the varied traditions of relating sustainably to the world around us through non-industrial agroecology\, agriculture\, silviculture\, aquaculture\, etc. that have been historically side-lined by imperialist design. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:New Art Center proudly introduces Zaira Meneses & Friends as they present: Altares de Dia de los Muertos. This event will include: Altar & Paper Cut Making. \nView all the work October 31\, 10:00 AM  – 4:00 PM with a special Son Jarocho Music & Day of Dead Celebration starting at 3:00 PM. \nNew Art Center in collaboration with Zaira Meneses\, a Mexican musician and recipient of the 2018 Boston Foundation Award\, will be presenting a three day opportunity to create an authentic Day of the Dead experience.  Students of all ages are encouraged to participate in the art of making traditional Mexican altar pieces expressing gratitude to loved ones no longer with us. From paper cutting to piñata making\, everyone is encouraged to take part in this three-day celebration being supervised by Zaira Meneses & Friends. Contact New Art Center if you’re interested in participating. \nThe exhibition date to view the altars will be open to the public on October 31st. Welcoming everyone will be the sounds of Son Jarocho\, an authentic music that originated in Mexico’s coastal Veracruz.  Traditional customary dress is optional\, but we encourage everyone to be creative and participate!

DESCRIPTION:In an unlikely turn of events\, Julie Beck became an artist. Starting with a less than mediocre natural artistic ability\, a degree in mathematics and a career in design/video editing\, a life completely centered around art and painting seemed unlikely. And yet\, this talk will prove otherwise. This is a Cinderella story with less gowns and much more paint-covered overalls. \nJulie is a Boston-based artist\, an instructor at and the Assistant Director of the Academy of Realist Art Boston. Julie uses painting to create accessible work that engages the viewer on multiple levels. SUMMARY:New Art Center presents: Site Specific Dance - For All Movers\, Artists\, and Dancers
DESCRIPTION:Improvise and make dances (all levels are invited) live\, and\, in-person\, inspired by the world around you: your kitchen\, your car\, a skyscraper\, a park bench. You will receive prompts one week in advance of class to inspire you to create a short movement piece. These short dances (~1 min) can provide a jumping-off point for further expansion\, they can be transformed into a 2D work of art\, or they can stand on their own two feet.
