SUMMARY:Scandi Cultural Center presents an exhibit with Ann Bausman
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT: ANN BAUSMAN\n\nAnn attributes her love of textiles to her mother who grew up in Finland\, a country where beautiful design is greatly revered. She always had a project — an embroidered pillow\, a cross-stitch wall-hanging\, a traditional Rya rug or a patch on Ann’s favorite pants. When her sons were little she focused on paper collage as a creative outlet. In a happy twist\, Ann’s youngest came home with an embroidered piece he’d made in art class\, and subsequently started embellishing a shirt and jeans. Ann’s interest in fabrics was reignited and not long after she’d started stitching\, a friend gave her some upholstery samples. There was no looking back. Ann became obsessed with finding and using “found fabric\,” taking inspiration from layering of colors and patterns. Look close at Ann’s pieces and you may see snippets from an old dishcloth\, a loved Boden skirt\, the now-too-tight Old Navy sundress or Marimekko fabric which she inherited from her mother. Several years ago Ann was inspired to stop buying new clothes in response to the waste and environmental impact of the fashion industry. She took to shopping at thrift stores\, mending pants (thanks Mom!) and reading up on boro stitching which has its roots in Japan. Reuse of even the smallest scraps of fabric and visible mending are characteristics of boro and can be found in my fabric collages and other pieces. Ann often employs a simple running stitch which adds texture and color. The process itself is slow and meditative. Her Mom would be proud! \nOn display September and October 2022 \nOpening reception Saturday\, September 24th | 4-6pm | FREE with registration

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: "Men of Terror" Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:BOOK TALK: MEN OF TERROR – A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF VIKING COMBAT\n\nA lecture by Dr. William R. Short \nViking society revolved around violence\, as seen in their myths\, poetry\, law codes\, pictures\, and even in their house architecture. One Viking\, a man named Fraði\, was memorialized on a runestone raised 1000 years ago and praised for being a “man of terror”. Who were these people who praised this violence\, and what made violence such an integral part of their society? \nJoin author Dr. William R. Short for an afternoon of surprising research results and fascinating insights into the lives and society of these people we call Vikings: these men of terror. This material\, based on a 20+ year-long scientific study of the combative methods of the Vikings\, is taken from the book\, Men of Terror: A Comprehensive Analysis of Viking Combat\, co-authored with Reynir A. Óskarson. The book presents\, for the first time\, a holistic picture of Viking combat\, created by combining and overlaying many different sources. \nSaturday\, January 22nd | 1pm | register here **advanced registration\, and proof of vaccination required**

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: "The Men's Room" Screening
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful Norwegian male choir is getting ready to warm up for Black Sabbath and to sing the last verse for their conductor. \n\nEvery Tuesday\, 25 men in their prime get together in a bar in Oslo to sing in a choir and drink beers. They have joked that they have promised to sing at each other’s funerals  and now it looks like the choir’s conductor will be the first to be sung out. The doctor has given him just a few months to live. Which is roughly the time that the male choir has to prepare for its biggest gig to date: a warm-up job for Black Sabbath. The countdown has started\, while both the cancer-stricken conductor and the wonderful lads in the choir try to keep their spirits high with songs about the hardships of middle-aged men\, while they also prepare to say farewell to each other. The joy of singing and community help them to open up to each other and their feelings. Rarely has a film been so funny and touching\, and you are both warmed on the inside and reduced to tears at the same time. ‘The Men’s Room’ is a film that goes straight to the heart and stays there. \nin Norwegian with English subtitles | 75 minutes \nSaturday\, December 11th | 1pm | $5; free for SCC members | Tickets here

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: Jazz on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Tap dance and jazz have a long and intertwined history. From the prohibition on musical instruments during the era of slavery\, which prompted the enslaved African-Americans to find ingenious ways to use their bodies as percussion instruments\, to the early 20th century New York City where Irish and African-American styles of dancing met and enriched each other while innovative popular musical styles were created through the fusion of cultures\, to the film era and the groundbreaking work of Fred Astaire – these two art forms developed side-by-side\, even if at some point their paths have grown somewhat apart. \nTap dancer Alex MacDonald – the original tap soloist and choreographer for the wildly popular vintage jazz band\, Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox – and pianist and improviser Alex Pryrodny present a fun and educational program that pays tribute to the historical roots of each discipline while fusing them in new ways\, with creativity and lightning speed communication of both virtuoso performers of full display. Get your hands clapping and your feet moving to the rhythms and sounds of “Jazz on Tap!” \n**please note that advanced registration\, masks\, and proof of vaccination are required for this event** \nSaturday\, November 13th | 1pm | register here \nPresented in partnership with Newton at Home.

SUMMARY:An Scandinavian Cultural Center presents: An Afternoon of Swedish History
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scandinavian Cultural Center for Carolus Rex – An Afternoon of Swedish History Concerning King Charles XII and the Great Northern War. \n“Were Socrates and Charles the Twelfth of Sweden both present in any company\, and Socrates to say\, ‘Follow me and hear a lecture on philosophy’ and Charles\, laying his hand on his sword\, to say\, ‘Follow me and dethrone the Czar’\, a man would be ashamed to follow Socrates.”  -Samuel Johnson \nCharles XII (1682-1718) was the last of Sweden’s warrior kings. He remains the only Swedish monarch born to absolutism and the last European monarch to die on the field of battle. He claimed the throne at age 15\, was called off to war at 18\, and spent the rest of his life in uniform trying to defeat a coalition of states that at one point or another included Denmark\, Poland-Saxony\, Russia\, Prussia\, and Great Britain. Charles’s armies stormed across Europe and under his direct leadership achieved miraculous victories often in the face of overwhelming odds. On a remote Ukrainian field in 1709\, Sweden lost the initiative. Years of desperate rearguard actions yielded further losses of territory and lives before culminating in the mysterious death of Charles himself at a lowly fortress in Norway. \nPublic opinion and literary history are quick to place Charles in one of two extreme categories- a noble warrior fated to defend a doomed empire – or – a tyrant driven by glory and bloodlust who sacrificed his kingdom on the altar of war. As always\, history is a bit more nuanced. \nCarolus Rex will place Charles XII in his appropriate historical context. SUMMARY:Scandinavian Cultural Center Book Talk: "We Share the Same Sky" with Rachael Cerrotti
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with author Rachael Cerrotti about her book We Share the Same Sky: A Memoir of Memory & Migration.  \nIt is the story of a granddaughter’s decade-long journey to retrace her grandmother’s wartime escape and weave together the thin threads of family history. \nIn 2009\, Rachael Cerrotti\, a college student pursuing a career in photojournalism\, asked her grandmother\, Hana\, if she could record her story. Rachael knew that her grandmother was a Holocaust survivor and the only one in her family alive at the end of the war. Rachael also knew that she survived because of the kindness of strangers. It wasn’t a secret. Hana spoke about her history publicly and regularly. But\, Rachael wanted to document it as only a granddaughter could. So\, that’s what they did: Hana talked and Rachael wrote. \nUpon Hana’s passing in 2010\, Rachael discovered an incredible archive of her life. There were preserved albums and hundreds of photographs dating back to the 1920s. There were letters waiting to be translated\, journals\, diaries\, deportation and immigration papers as well as creative writings from various stages of Hana’s life. \nRachael digitized and organized it all\, plucking it from the past and placing it into her present. Then\, she began retracing her grandmother’s story\, following her through Central Europe\, Scandinavia\, and across the United States. She tracked down the descendants of those who helped save her grandmother’s life during the war. Rachael went in pursuit of her grandmother’s memory to explore how the retelling of family stories becomes the history itself. \nWe Share the Same Sky weaves together the stories of these two young women — Hana as a refugee who remains one step ahead of the Nazis at every turn\, and Rachael\, whose insatiable curiosity to touch the past guides her into the lives of countless strangers\, bringing her love and tragic loss. Throughout the course of her twenties\, Hana’s history becomes a guidebook for Rachael in how to live a life empowered by grief. \nSunday\, October 17th | 2pm | register here **advanced registration and proof of vaccination required to attend**

SUMMARY:SCC Concert: The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a fiddle trio that masterfully blends the traditions of Norway\, Sweden\, and the Shetland Islands. Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway)\, Anders Hall (Sweden)\, and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands)\, have swiftly gained a reputation for their gripping and unique blend of fiddle music since the inception of the Bloc in early 2009. They maintain a firm focus on the traditions of their home\, while developing a sound that has been described as “meaningful\,””intense\,” and “invigorating.” Their clever use of harmony\, rhythm\, riffs\, and bass lines creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled but at the same time dumbfounded that the sound only comes from three fiddles. Cost is $20; $10 for SCC members. More info at scandicenter.org. \n“Seldom before can three fiddlers have sounded so well matched as the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. And seldom before can three fiddles have sounded so much like four and at times five instruments without using electronic trickery.” – The Herald
