SUMMARY:Zamir Chorale presents: Leonard Bernstein - The Jewish Side
DESCRIPTION:Join Zamir Chorale’s Artistic Director\, Josh Jacobson as he presents “Leonard Bernstein: The Jewish Side.” Leonard Bernstein took the musical world by storm with his spectacular last-minute\, a-star-is-born conducting turn with the New York Philharmonic in 1943. SUMMARY:Newton Art Association presents: Watercolor - Demo with Gary Tucker
DESCRIPTION:Gary Tucker started painting with life long mentor and artist\, Anita Fahs. She introduced oil painting\, the impressionists\, and the value of working from life. Soon after\, Gary decided to make art his life path. Eventually he was drawn east to Boston where he met Professor Kaji Aso at the SMFA. Professor Aso introduced eastern aesthetics\, Calligraphy and Sumi painting. Gary quickly graduated to watercolor and found that he could achieve much more subtlety and expressiveness through this temperamental media. \n“Through the media of watercolor and my process of painting I find power through brushwork\, and subtlety through transparency.” \n“Watercolor differs from other media in that there is a performance aspect to it. The fine pieces come out in one sitting and very often like a classic performance\, something happens\, a fusion of mind and subject\, an improvisation that cannot be duplicated.” \nThis event will be held over Zoom on Thursday\, March 11th\, at 7:00 PM. Click here to join the Zoom.

SUMMARY:NTC's And Then We Baked Bread: An Evening of Quarantine-Inspired Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Newton Theatre Company is thrilled to be starting off 2021 with an evening of engaging live performances! \nA virtual collage of music\, movement\, and theatre. “And Then We Baked Bread” is a snapshot of life in its most uncertain moments. This evening of short performances is a seriously fun\, perfectly imperfect\, raw and honest release\, teaching us what it means to live fully in the present moment even if it’s scary. \nAbout “always nothing else” by Beth Hyland\, the short play that will be featured during the production: \nMarco Polo is an app that lets you record videos of yourself for your friends\, and Meg and Tom are two friends sending each other videos on Marco Polo during These Difficult Times. always nothing else follows Meg and Tom as they bake/don’t bake\, cope/don’t cope\, drink/definitely drink\, and maybe/maybe don’t realize what they actually really need from each other. \nalways nothing else was originally developed at First Floor Theater.

SUMMARY:Theatre Ink presents: Lost and Found - The Untold Stories of People of Color

Lost and Found will be a reserved safe space for this exploration and for people of color to be vulnerable and receive support. Lost and Found invites you to share your story\, using theatre and performing arts as an outlet. \nClick here to buy tickets.

SUMMARY:Historic Newton presents: A Town Called 'Rejoycing'
DESCRIPTION:A Town Called ‘Rejoycing’\nReconsidering John Eliot’s 1646 Mission to the ‘Indians’\n\nDate:01/28/2021 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation:Virtual\nVirtual Meeting\nNewton\, Massachusetts 02459\nIntroduction: Drew Lopenzina\, an eminent scholar of of Early American and Native American literatures and author of “Red Ink” lectures with the Newton Free Library\n\nHistory tells us that John Eliot\, the “Apostle to the Indians\,” came to the area of present-day Newton in 1646 to preach to the local indigenous communities of Massachusetts and Nipmucs in their own language. His mission was part of an overall endeavor by the Puritans to convert the Natives of the land to Christianity. Both history and tradition tend to place Eliot speaking down to the “children of the forest” gathered at his feet. As we mark the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim’s first landing at Plymouth\, however\, it is an opportune time to re-situate this encounter in Native space. What did Native people have to gain by welcoming Eliot into their community and what were they ultimately prepared to sacrifice under increased colonial pressure to adopt a foreign religious belief structure? Register through the Newton Free Library to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:SCC Author Series: "The Viking Woman of Birka" with David K. Mullaly
DESCRIPTION:Asa was a young woman who avenged a personal assault\, was forced to become a warrior and leader during her family’s travels\, and ultimately became responsible for defending Birka\, one of the great Viking trade centers. This actual Norse woman made her mark during a violent time. \n\nA Viking burial found on the Swedish island of Birka\, identified as Bj.581\, contained what was recently identified as the remains of a woman warrior and leader. What was found there confirmed that she was female and presented herself as such. Testing also suggested that she traveled extensively when she was young. What we cannot know for sure is how she grew into the role which typically was filled by men in the Norse culture. \nJoin author David K. Mullaly for talk about his latest novel. Order David’s book here. \nThis event is on Saturday\, December 5th at 1pm via zoom | FREE register here
