*Historic Newton presents Half American: The Epic Story of Black Americans Fighting WWII, an author discussion as part of its Newton History Series. This Thursday, February 10 at 5:00 p.m. join historian Matthew Delmont to listen to stories from his upcoming book about Black troops who fought bravely in combat and formed the backbone of the U.S. military’s supply effort, all while fighting in a segregated military. This is an inspiring history of bravery and patriotism in the face of unfathomable racism.  Register here for this virtual event that illuminates questions regarding race and democracy that remain unanswered more than seventy years later. 

*There’s a lot to love this weekend in Newton. The Charles River Regional Chamber launches their “Love Local” campaign to encourage shopping locally and dining at area restaurants while All Over Newton’s “Love Fest” showcases local shopping for Valentine’s Day. Also check out Newton Community Pride’s “WinterFEST” – a huge two-day lineup of fun family activities with live music, dance, ice sculpting, giant puppets, hot cocoa, and shopping galore. Spread some love to Newton’s businesses this weekend.

*On Sunday, February 13th at 3:00 p.m., Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston presents Salon Series 3 – Wynton Marsalis’ At The Octoroon Balls performed live at NCA’s Allen Center for Arts and Culture. Pro Arte’s regular string quartet joins forces with the Janelle Gillchrist Dance Troupe for an interdisciplinary exploration of Wynton Marsalis’s first string quartet. Purchase your tickets here for this intimate interdisciplinary performance.

*Don’t forget to root for the Rams or the Bengals this Super Bowl Sunday.  At 5:00 p.m., The First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton hosts a virtual Plant-Based Super Bowl Party to show off edible creations from plant-based nachos to vegetarian chili recipes or whatever you can dream up. *Join Zamir Chorale of Boston on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. for part 2 of the online series A Choral Rainbow. This virtual event features recorded choral performances and conversations with the conductors of diverse and under-represented communities including The Dallas Street Choir, The Yiddish Philharmonic Chorus, and The Philadelphia Heritage Chorale. Expose yourself to music representing different cultures, ethnicities, and ways of thinking with A Choral Rainbow.
