Project Mission Statement:

The panAFRICAproject aims to create a contemporary visual portrait of modern Africa, using photography and advanced technologies to establish a repository of images for all 54 countries. This collection will avoid preconceived Western notions of conflict, pestilence, and poverty, instead documenting Africa's highlights and inner workings as the most progressive continent of the 21st century. By collaborating with local leaders, knowledgeable natives, and citizens, we aim to capture the unique characteristics of each country, region, community, and tribe. Emphasizing cultural identity, industrial progress, educational advances, medical practices, high-tech sophistication, and indigenous traditions, we allow internal interests to guide our coverage. Spending significant time in each location, we use long shutter speeds to capture traditions and new initiatives and wide apertures to showcase a diverse range of activities. While we don't shy away from prevalent issues or tourist clichés, our goal is to reflect the current human condition and celebrate life with all its love, innovation, balance, and ordinary spirit.

Who is Lou Jones?

Lou Jones is a freelance photographer with a long-established studio in Boston, where he has employed assistants, interns, and managers for years. He has extensive experience working with advertising agencies, publications, and corporations worldwide, having completed projects in 63 foreign countries and 48 states, shot 13 Olympics, and exhibited his work extensively. Jones has taught at Boston University, Massachusetts College of Art, CDIA, and Maine Photographic Workshops, and has published over a dozen photography books. His work aims to be ubiquitous and timeless, evoking emotional or intellectual responses from his audience. Balancing commercial, documentary, fine art, and personal long-term projects, Jones focuses on dynamic narratives rather than static portraits. His subjects range from jazz and tall ships to pregnancy, the death penalty, and Japan, emphasizing people on the fringes of these topics. He strives to elevate the graphic and compositional language of photography without artifice, using color and black-and-white to enhance his vision. For Jones, the real world is interesting enough to transcend imagination in its purest form.
