*New Rep Theatre presents Larry Kramer’s Tony Award-winning autobiographical drama, The Normal Heart now Through Sunday, July 9th. Set during the AIDS epidemic in New York City in the early 1980s, this influential, passionate, and controversial play was the first to seriously treat the poignant and devastating subject of AIDS. Tickets are available for various showtimes here.
*Experience Lunch-Time Pop-Ups at The Allen Center, beginning Thursday, June 22nd, and running through July, a different Newton restaurant is popping up at The Allen Center’s gorgeous patio, bringing new tastes, cuisines, and cultures to West Newton. Even better? A rotating showcase of Newton small businesses and artists will pop up too, for a little summer lunchtime retail therapy. *Saturday, June 24th at 8:00 pm & Monday, June 26th at 7:00 pm, Newton Theatre Company presents The Monologue Project: LGBTQ+, the stories of Newton LGBTQ+ folks with a variety of identities and backgrounds as they share challenges they have overcome and take pride in their identities. Music and other performances will be interspersed among the monologues at Saturday’s performance to showcase all different aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. *The Allen Center presents the Inaugural Concert for Allen Center Outdoors – a summer series of outdoor programs on the grounds of The Allen Center – FREE and open to the public on Friday, June 24th at 6:30 pm. Advance registration is recommended. The fabulous Boston-based early jazz & acoustic blues jug band, Outrageous Fortune, led by guitarist Chris Welles is famous for its colorful sound and sweet harmonies. On this occasion, the group will be joined by Newton’s own Annie Raines who is best known as a harmonicist. Register here for this free event sponsored in part by the Newton Cultural Council.
*Summer In the Highlands, The Hyde Community Center hosts an outdoor summer family concert and movie series on Friday nights. Summer in the Highlands features local bands and family-friendly films. These free events held in the Hyde Playground on the Hyde Community Center bandstand showcase a myriad of NCA Member Organizations and draw hundreds of local families.
