The Newton Cultural Alliance highlights our member events happening around Newton this week. Enjoy a great winter week of arts & culture!

 

*New Art Center presents Friday Figure Draw on Friday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m. at their location at 61 Washington Park, Newton. Take part in a life-drawing open studio with a live model, beginning with quick poses and ending with an hour pose. The evening will be relaxed but professional, with music, a great model, and the opportunity to purchase wine or beer. No photography allowed. No instruction. Bring your own art supplies (no oils); easels/chairs provided. For artists 21+, ID required. Cost is $20. More info at newartcenter.org.

*The Scandinavian Cultural Center presents Opera is Cool: Birgit Nilsson—A Life Well Sung on Saturday, January 25, at 1:00 p.m. at their location at 206 Waltham Street, West Newton. Birgit Nilsson, the Swedish Dramatic Soprano who tamed Richard Wagner, was in a league of her own. Her voice reverberated against the walls of the world’s greatest opera houses for nearly 40 years. Nilsson was best known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Come and enjoy an audiovisual tribute to this great Swedish soprano, whose accomplishments in the world of opera are unequaled. Cost is $15, $7 for SCC members. More info at scandicenter.org.

*Suzuki School of Newton presents its Student Solo Recitals on Saturday, January 25, at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the United Parish of Auburndale, 64 Hancock Street, Auburndale. Enjoy the wonderful accomplishments of violin, viola, cello, piano, flute, guitar, and harp students from the Suzuki School of Newton. Students will present their polished pieces in two solo recitals: one beginning at 3:30 p.m. and a second beginning at 4:30 p.m. FREE and open to the public. More info at suzukinewton.org.

*Newton Free Library presents Chinese Dulcimer Guzheng Youth Band on Sunday, January 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Druker Auditorium at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer Street, Newton. Head over to Newton Free Library for a special concert in celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year 2020, the Year of the Rat. Students from the Boston Art School for Chinese Music will perform. *NewTV presents its HD Camera Workshop on Wednesday, January 29, at 7:00 p.m. at the NewTV studio, 23 Needham Street, Newton. This exciting workshop at NewTV will guide you through how to shoot and create film using an HD camera. Get certified on NewTV’s Sony NXCAM, so you can rent it for any film project you have!
