*The Scandinavian Cultural Center presents a screening of The Cake General on Saturday, November 23, at 1:00 p.m. at their location at 206 Waltham Street, West Newton. Enjoy the film The Cake General at the Scandinavian Cultural Center! Based on a true story, the directorial debut of popular Swedish personalities Filip and Fredrik is an outrageous, unconventional comedy set in the 1980s about an eccentric resident of “the most boring town in Sweden” who decides to put his sleepy hamlet on the map by assembling the world’s longest layer cake. *New Philharmonia Orchestra presents From Gustav, With Love on Saturday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 24, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon Street, Newton Centre. The New Phil has an exciting season filled with celebratory spirit, incredible music, and exciting guest performances. Join them as they celebrate their 25th season with vibrant works of Mahler, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Vignieri, culminating with Beethoven’s great Symphony No. 9! Tickets are $10-$48. *Newton Free Library presents Music & Poetry on Sunday, November 24, at 2:00 p.m. in their Druker Auditorium, 330 Homer Street, Newton. This program combines poetry and music, and highlights ways that words and music can influence each other. Performers Mary Crowe and Evelyn Harris will read poems and then play the musical settings of those poems. The audience is invited to experience both versions and react to how the settings affect the language, meaning, and sound of poetry. FREE and open to the public. More info at newtonfreelibrary.net.

*Newton Family Singers presents their 10th Anniversary Concert featuring the songs of Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac on Sunday, November 24, at 4:00 p.m. at JCC Newton, 333 Nahanton Street, Newton. Since 2009, the Newton Family Singers has given family-friendly, inter-generational choral concerts to the Newton community. What better way to celebrate than a concert of favorite songs by Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac? Tie on a flowing scarf and come sing along with Newton Family Singers as they celebrate the songs of Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and more. *NewTV presents the class Field Production Orientation on Monday, November 25, at 7:00 p.m. at the NewTV studio, 23 Needham Street, Newton. NewTV’s orientations offer you a look into what is possible at our media center and help set you down the right production path. If you are interested in documentary filmmaking, or event coverage, then this is the orientation for you. Learn how to use our equipment out in the field.
