*On Friday, September 13th at 8:00 pm, The Newton Theatre Company opens The Guys at St. John’s Episcopal Church. In post-9/11 New York City, Nick, a fire captain, and Joan, a writer, share their experiences and lean on each other as they write eight eulogies for fallen firefighters. These two strangers navigate their grief through humor, compassion, the written word – and the power of human connection. Check out their full program here.
*On Saturday, September 14th from 9:00 am – 1:30 pm FUUSN sings great gospel and soul songs with Geoffrey Hicks. Geoff is active as a pianist, composer, performer, lecturer, recording artist, arranger and conductor. All singers are invited to the workshop to sing in the service on Sunday, Sept. 15th. Registration details are available here.
*On Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 pm Historic Newton walks. How does a burying ground tell our local story? Ramble through East Parish Burying Ground with Historic Newton as they visit the grave sites of some of Newton’s early English settlers and the location of the 17th-century meetinghouse. More info about what to expect on this hour-long stroll is here.
*On Sunday, September 15th at 3:00 pm, join Newton Community Pride at the 2024 Fall Village Concert Series with Crowes Pasture at The Suzuki School of Newton. Monique Byrne and Andy Rogovin perform a night of moving and inspirational songs. The duo, Crowes Pasture, intimately blends vocal harmonies with a unique instrumental style that is best described as “a banjo-guitar romance.” Registration for this event is suggested, but not required. The final concert will take place at The Allen Center on September 22nd showcasing Alexander Xhoja Trio. All are welcome!
*On Tuesday, September 17th at 7:00 pm, The Allen Center hosts an Artist Talk with Lou Jones, the photographer behind the exquisite exhibition hanging in The Allen Center’s ground-floor gallery space. The PanAFRICA Project aims to create a contemporary visual portrait of modern Africa, using photography and advanced technologies to establish a repository of images for all 54 countries. This collection avoids preconceived Western notions of conflict, pestilence, and poverty, instead documenting Africa’s highlights and inner workings as the most progressive continent of the 21st century. Attend this artist talk to see the magnificent photos and to hear directly from the artist about his work.
