*Historic Newton presents Baymen in the Bay State: Viking Myths on Thursday, September 17th at 5:00 PM. Explore the origins of the myths surrounding the Vikings and Leif Erikson’s alleged exploration and settlement of Massachusetts. Learn about how negligent scholarship and forged maps and transcriptions have led to a statue of Erikson on Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue. Suggested donation is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. *Join Amherst Early Music for their online class “The Curious Case of the Loeillet Recorder Duets: What Makes a Duet Good?” on Saturday, September 19th at 1:00 PM. You’ll sample Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Gant’s sonatas and duets for the recorder, consider what changed to make the duets work better, and tackle the pesky mystery of all of those composers named Loeillet. *Sign your children up for New Art Center’s upcoming class Creative Construction for Grades K-2, beginning on Monday, September 21st at 4:00 PM. The class will be conducted over Zoom and run until November 30th. Young artists will explore the world of 3-D as they create sculptures and constructions using clay, cardboard, felt, found objects and other materials. They will improve fine motor skills as they manipulate, cut, bend, sculpt and balance, using creative problem solving under the guidance of a New Art instructor. *Join the Newton Free Library for an online discussion called “Don’t Take the Bait – Helping You Identify Misinformation” on Tuesday, September 22nd at 11:00 AM. Misinformation is everywhere these days. In this class we will offer strategies to help you sift through what is exaggerated, misleading or completely false to find more accurate online information and become better digital consumers. *Enjoy this photography project, Newton Community Cameras 2020: The Early Days of the Coronavirus Pandemic. This project was a collaborative effort between Historic Newton, Newton Community Pride, and The City of Newton’s Cultural Development Department. The photos in this exhibit show how we have grieved the sense of normalcy that we lost but also found moments of beauty, connection to others, resilience, and even humor during the shutdown.
