5 Things To Do This Week -10/28/20
Newton Cultural Alliance highlights virtual arts & culture things to do
NCA is keeping you connected with each other and with your favorite local arts and culture organizations.
*Check out the New Art Center’s upcoming workshop Gesture, Color, Painting, which runs weekly from Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 PM, to Thursday, December 3rd. This exciting class will bridge the methods of gesture drawing with abstract painting. Students will investigate intuitive mark-making as the base for an abstract painting, and explore ways that color heightens the work. They will explore the relationship between line, shape and color, and look at art from the present and past to better understand the possibilities. Students will use both drawing materials and acrylic paint to create a series of works on canvas. See website for materials list and registration information.
*Join the Newton Free Library for a discussion with New Kid author Jerry Craft on Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00 PM on Zoom. The award winning author will take you behind the scenes of his bestselling graphic novels and give you a look into his writing and drawing process. This event is for kids, tweens, teens and their families. Click here to learn more and register.
*Sign up for Newton Art Association’s new workshop Price Versus Value. On Thursday, October 29th at 7:00 PM, participants will have the opportunity to delve into one of the most difficult questions regarding art – how to price one’s work. Beacon Gallery owner and International Society of Appraisers member Christine O’Donnell will present various strategies an artist can go to for pricing artwork, discuss gallery pricing of work, and answer any questions. She will also present how appraisers are trained to calculate value for artwork, and why price and value may not be the same. Click here to register.
*Join the Scandinavian Cultural Center for a virtual screening of the 2013 documentary Trespassing Bergman, available daily throughout the month of October. This film takes you to Bergman’s mystical home in the company of great directors such as Michael Haneke, Claire Denis and Alejandro González Iñárritu. “Trespassing Bergman” tells the story of Ingmar Bergman, his island, and some of his most central films. Click here to view the trailer and purchase tickets.
*Head over to the Newton Free Library for Early Voting, available daily until Friday, October 30th. Election day is Tuesday, November 3rd, but if you’re a Newton voter and wish to vote in-person and early, you can safely do so at the Newton Free Library. Click here for more information.
