5 Things To Do This Week – 3/3/21
Newton Cultural Alliance highlights virtual arts & culture things to do
NCA is keeping you connected with each other and with your favorite local arts and culture organizations.
*Historic Newton invites you to their upcoming film and discussion Activism and “Redeeming Uncle Tom.” On Wednesday, March 3rd at 5:00 PM, come watch a screening of “Redeeming Uncle Tom,” a film about Josiah Henson, whose life story inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe and her 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Learn how Henson fits into the beginning of an organized movement for abolition, which coalesced in the 1830s and led to Stowe using her novel to promote social justice. This program is funded in part by a grant from Mass Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Register here to attend this Zoom program.
*Join the New Art Center for their upcoming Artist Talk with Nathalie Miebach on Thursday, March 4th at 5:30 PM. Nathalie’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, she translates scientific data related to ecology, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures, in particular basket weaving. Central to this work is the desire to explore the role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of scientific information. Click here for more information.
*The Newton Free Library will begin a new drop-in meetup event, Fiber, Fabric, and Fun. Do you knit? Crochet? Weave? Sew? Some, all of the above, or more? Whether you’re just starting out or you’re a crafting expert, you’re invited to this monthly fiber arts meetup! Beginning on Thursday, March 4th at 7:00 PM, and occurring the first Thursday of every month, get or give advice, ideas, or just chat while you work on your latest project. No registration necessary.
