Class Description
Looking South of the Alps – Landini and the Italian trecento I – Early Notation with Annette Bauer
Parallel to the innovations of the French Ars Nova a different style of notation developed in Italy, which was also designed to be rhythmically more precise and versatile than the notation used in previous centuries. The Italian style is typically simply referred to as “trecento” notation, named after the century. Recognized as one of the most famous composers of the Italian trecento is Francesco Landini (ca. 1324-1397), who was a blind composer, organist, singer, poet, and instrument maker. We will explore his compositions transmitted in sources such as the beautiful early 15th century Squarcialupi Codex and others.
