Caridad Svich’s adaptation of Julia Álvarez’s 1994 novel In The Time of the Butterflies follows four sisters known as the “Mariposas” (Butterflies), Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Mate as they live through the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic in the early 20th century. The sisters were real historical figures, and while this is a fictionalized account of their lives, in actuality they inspired resistance cells throughout the country.

As the play unfolds, audiences journey through time, and experience the interior lives of the activist sisters from the beginning of the dictatorship, to decades later as their story is being told by an older Dedé to an American Journalist.

In The Time of the Butterflies is a powerful, beautiful, poignant play about family, love, and fighting for freedom.
