5 Things To Do This Week – 2/3/21

Newton Cultural Alliance highlights virtual arts & culture things to do

NCA is keeping you connected with each other and with your favorite local arts and culture organizations.

*Join the New Art Center for their winter Artist Talk Series featuring contemporary artists whose work examines climate and the environment. On Thursday, February 4th at 5:30 PM, Sophy Tuttle, an interdisciplinary artist based in Lowell, MA, will speak about her work as a muralist and installation artist, as well as about other artists who are working with the same themes of nature, research, and environmental activism within art. Click here for more information.

*Join the Newton Free Library for a virtual screening of Legacy of Love, a new documentary by Roberto Mighty. On Thursday, February 4th at 7:00 PM, learn about the mostly unknown story of Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott’s formative years in 1950’s Boston – where they met as students, fell in love, and started on the road to becoming worldwide leaders and iconic symbols for the rights of oppressed people all over the world. The half hour documentary also highlights the influence of Coretta Scott’s leftist politics on their mutual trajectories. Taking stylistic cues from narrative filmmaking, this documentary explores their romantic relationship and their dreams for a life of activism and family. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Mr. Mighty. Click here to register.

*Pro Arte invites you to the second concert in their Winter Salon Series, which takes place entirely online. On Thursday, February 4th at 8:00 PM, enjoy works by Ravel, Dohnányi, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. The concert will premiere on Thursday and will be available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere, the performance will also be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. Click here to purchase tickets.

*Sign up now for the Newton Art Association’s next Online Artists’ Demos. Join Debra Claffey on Sunday, February 7th at 2:00 PM for a lesson in Painting with Cold Wax over Zoom. This demo offers an introduction to the cold wax medium and techniques to use it in painting and mixed media work. You will cover all the basics so that you will understand how and, more importantly why, you might incorporate cold wax into your artistic practice. Click here to learn about the artist and get the Zoom link.

*The Newton Free Library invites you and your kids to their upcoming storytelling event Tales to Treasure. On Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00 PM, come listen to great stories, share what you think via chat, and even vote on what you would like us to read next. Join the library for this interactive program where you will listen to a variety of read-alouds. For grades K-2. Click here for the Zoom link.
