5 Things To Do This Week – 3/17/21
Newton Cultural Alliance highlights virtual arts & culture things to do
NCA is keeping you connected with each other and with your favorite local arts and culture organizations.
*How did threats posed by fire forge community in early America? And how did Newtonians respond? Join Historic Newton as they explore the role of volunteer fire companies, read personal accounts that highlight the ubiquity of fire in the 1800s (including the Great Boston Fire of 1872), and examine artifacts from fire buckets to photographs to learn more about fire culture and the people and tools that helped protect the community. The program takes place Thursday, March 18 at 5:00 PM. To register, click here. Donations may be made here.
*Newton Free Library presents the next event in their Green Newton Series. On Thursday, March 18th at 7:00 PM, learn about Newton’s Progress and Challenges with Climate Action. Halina Brown, Chair of the Newton Citizens Commission on Energy, will describe Newton’s achievements to date on our 2019 Climate Action Plan. She will highlight the challenges ahead and will explain what citizens can do to contribute to our progress. Additionally, she will draw on the recent research findings about effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emission, and discuss Newton in the context of the goals of the Paris Climate Accords. Registration for this program will end two hours before the start time. The Zoom login information will be sent just after registration closes.
*Pro Arte invites you to the fourth and final concert in their Winter Salon Series, which takes place entirely online. On Thursday, March 18th at 8:00 PM, enjoy a concert featuring works by Mendelssohn and Shaw. The concert will premiere on Thursday and will be available to watch through the following Sunday. On the night of the premiere, the performance will be followed by a live Q&A session with that night’s musicians. Tickets for each performance are $20 for an individual or $35 for families. *Join the Scandinavian Cultural Center on a virtual vacation to Iceland! Using photos and video, the trip starts in Reykjavik from the archeological dig of a Viking settlement to the vibrant city of today. From there, we travel around the country, where culture and the fascinating history is brought to life through a tour of vibrant photographs, mythology and stories unique to the towns and regions. This is an interactive experience where participation through Q&A is encouraged. Register here.
